He was o ne of the fort unate few riders that esca ped a first turn pileup , which took o ut many rid ers including Kevin Brown , who was making his debut ride o n a KTM , and KTM 's Mark H yde. In th e cras h, Hyde's bik e suffered a hol e in th e sidecase a nd was forced out of th e race after a co u p le of la ps. Lojak said, " Su m mers a nd I came aro und the first lap together a nd I stretched it o ut to abo ut a m inute and 20 seconds." Wh a t L oja k didn't k now was Su m mers had to sto p a nd rep air a clutch cable th at had come loose from the side cover and lost ab out five mi n u tes in do ing a bailing-wire job . Plessinger was involved in th e first -turn mi shap a nd was dead last after restartin g. H e co u ldn 't reall y effectively get into the race pa ce unti l th e fourth or fifth lap. At th at tim e, Lojak had ab out a minute a nd eig h tsecond lead a nd th en ga ssed it up until he had approximat el y two minutes on the next rid er. " I let h im arou nd me and th en we came to a turn a nd 1 went wide a nd sq ua red it off and he went o n the outside," said Loj ak , "and wh en I passed him, we to uc hed handlebars. Pr etty soon he a nd I were ge tti ng into it, Then we sto p ped in th e woods and talk ed it over a nd th ought we were foolish for doing it." P lessi n ger sa id, " He (Loja k ) thought 1 cut him off, but I was holding my line a nd he pl owed into me." H e also said th at it wasn 't worth fig h t i n g about and th ey just shru gged it off. Turning in a very consistent race was Conner, wh o said, " Everything went well. It was a fun race and was run well. The front pi le-u p messed me up a little bit, th ough." Connor was also o ne of th e race lead ers whe n Lojak a nd Pl essinger got slowed in a bottlen eck. " By luck Sco tt a nd Ed got ca ug h t and I go t arou nd th em a nd was able to lead for a whi le," sa id Conner. " I led for a bo ut a half a la p before Ed go t arou nd me. I was able to hold off Scott until the last la p , bu t -he got around me with a real good drive." McSwa in was also exha u sted aft er hi s race, saying , " I' m j ust not in shape. I also ha d problem s wit h the front susp ensio n being too soft and I reall y d id try to ca tch up, but 1 go t tired. In one sectio n , I had to push it u p a hill due to a bo ttl en eck of slo wer riders." Shepard said after the ra ce, " I had a good sta rt , but I al so go t caught in the bottlen eck for a wh ile, a nd that cost me abo ut fivc m inutes in tryin g to get th rough . 1 had to push it , but it's the best 1 co uld do." • •24TH, They're a bunch of hot and shape ly wild things.
