In the Qua lifi er Seri es th is year. Hawkin s proved h is prowess b y consistent ly fin ishing near the top of th e cha rts. In Oklahoma, Hawkins finish ed third in th e 250cc class. took e ighth o ve ra ll in Michigan and la nded third in class in Ida ho (h e did not ride in Oregon). H e is al so cu rre n t ly lea d i n g th e National Championship Enduro Series point standings with just two rounds remaining in Rhode Island and Cal ifornia. Hawkins' forte is his speed on the trails. H e is lightening qui c k through the trees a n d bushes, and is more at home on tight and rugged trai ls. rather tha n the smoother and higher speed sections. He regards himself as a specia list on the tight and technical trails; he prefers wet conditions . and rock y a n d o rr camber terrain. H awkins' specia l test times are com petitive. After some heavy deliberations as to wh o would replace H ough. it was decided to let th e three a lready named Jr. World rid ers. H awkins. Aaron Hough and Hoess, do th e choosin g. There were four main riders eligible for th e job: Scott Summers. Jimmy Lewis. Todd Harris and Joe Zierman. T he idea l rider for th e posi tion would perferably be a four- stroke rider. one who is fast in th e sp ecia l tests and who has Six Days experience - Harris go t th e job . The T exan has co m peted i n tw o ISDEs (1987 and '88), ea rn in g silver an d bronze med al s. Altho ugh H arris rode a 250cc two -stroke at both ISDEs. h e cha nged to th e four-stroke class halfwa y through th e Qualifier Seri es. The switch gave him th at deciding vote he needed to make th e team. Harris is a well-rounded off-road rider who' keeps his riding ski ll s sharp by co m pe tin g in th e T exa s En d uro Seri es, many National Enduros, a n d most of the ISD E Qua li fiers . In Oklahoma, Harris finished eig h th in th e 250cc class . fifth in Michigan a nd had three good days in th e four stro ke class in Idah o. His spee d o n th e trai l is pl enty fast a nd hi s times in th e specia l tests are sufficient. His onl y b lemish would be a lack o f riding and mech anical experie nce o n a four-stroke.
