T eam Mot or Sport's Rich ard Arnaiz and Phil Kress had held second in points, a co mforta ble three points ah ead of the absent H yp erCycle and 10 a head of Gibsonia/ Englert. But th eir Yam aha FZR IOOO lunched an intake cam in practice. and when th eir backup FZR750 went belly-up. so too did th eir hopes. So wh en Bob Englert offered Mo tor Sport the use of h is spare FZR750, the y graciour'y accepted. However . th e bike was painfull y stock. and wore Michelin Hi-Sport street rad ial s rather than slic ks. Wh en Arnaiz returned from th e warm-up lap. . he summarized its performance ca pa bili ties: " It's a stone." he said.
