Juan Garriga. who performed well on the Cagiva 500 in 1986. is the latest name on the possible 500cc list with Ago. while new 125cc World Champion Alex Criville is a possible Cadalora replacement on a 250. Criville already runs in Marlboro colors. And. like Gardner, Kevin Schwantz - curre n tl y the fastest man in the 500cc class - is being wooed by Agostini. Au stralian Kevin Magee was on e of four riders due to test Cagiva 's GP bik e at Rij eka in Yugosl avia after the Czech GP, as a possibl e teammate or eve n re p laceme n t for Randy Marnol a. Also sla ted for th e. test session were Bri tish veteran Ron Haslam , IS-year-old Brazilian Alexandre Barros, the top 250cc privat eer at Brno, and British -born Ameri can Allan Scott, wh o was 10th in the I25cc·championship o n a Honda. Budget restrictions may limit him to two riders. and Magee is third on the list. Regarding the Cagiva test. Magee said. "They fixed it up w ith Kenny (Roberts). but as far as I'm concerned it's only a test. a nd Cagiva is one of a num be r of tea m s on the table. If it ' s possib le. I'd prefer to stay with Kenny on t he Lucky Strike team." The September 17 Brazil ian G P faced the threa t of ca ncella tio n yet agai n in the weeksleading up to the Czech G P, after it was discovered that mo re organiza tio na l mess -u ps h ad allowed block ai r-freig ht, hot el , and other cruc ia l book in gs to lapse. IRRTA was obliged to swi tch thei r lull attent io n to sa lvagi ng th e operation. FIM roa d race co mmiss ion boss J o Zegwaard p lanned a pr ess conference at Brno, but wh en th e Brazili an o rga n ize r T ambu cci decl ined to be pr esent, Zegw aard called it off. ''I'm not goi ng to ca rry the ca n for Tambucci," he said. The GP will go ahea d as sched uled, by the skin of its teeth - and th e reason is more than the desir e to give th e mechanics a yea r-e n d party to remember. Next year' s Brazilian GP is earmarked to run at Rio, to be run by Berni e Ecclestone, racing's current em inence grise. If this year's Brazilian GP were allowed to collapse of its own accord (as it surely wou ld without outside assista nce), the FIM regulation s sti pu la te th at th e 1990 Brazilian GP would also a utomatica lly be cancelled. The 22nd Invitational Le Cercle Concours d'Elegance will be held Sunday. September 24. at the West Los Angeles Veteran 's Administrat ion Grounds. The event. which benefits the Eddie Cantor Charitable Foundation for Cancer Research at the John Wayne Cancer C lin ic. features automobiles but is open to motorcycles built in 1975 or earlier. A meeting between top Pro Twins Modified Production road racers and AMA officia ls was held prior to th e September 3 AMA Nati on al a t Heartland Park T opeka in Kansas. The meeting was in regards to next year' s rule book for th e Modified Production clas s. The majority of the Mod Prod cla ss is up in arms over the domination shown by the the Two Brothers Racing effort and their tricked-out Honda Hawk, and many say they will quit the class if the ru les aren 't changed to disallow mod ifications such as titanium rods, etc. "Reno (Leoni ) wants it box stoc k so th e Ducati S5 Is wi ll dominate, (Cra ig) Sh ambaugh wants weight restrictions so his F-I will be com petitive, and we want it left alone because we're winning," said Craig Erion following the meeting. Case in point : " 1will race the GP (Pro Twins GP) c lass next year if the ru les stay the same." Mod Prod competitor Pablo Real said. " T h e y (Two Brothers) have a factory team. The only mechanic here is myse lf. Reno (Le o n i) doesn't have t ime and it's hard to compete against a team with 10 people . It would be different if their bike was bone stock. I think next year they (t he Erions) w ill race alone. It will be some loc a l guy and them. They are club racing w ith a factory bike," AMA /Cast rol 250cc Grand Prix Championship runner-up Richard Oliver is still unsure of hi s pl ans for 1990. " Randy Mamola Ra cing (the team he raced for thi s season ) is at th e top of my list if I can't go to Europe," Oliver said in Kansas on September 3. ''I'm loo king at my o p tio ns now. It co uld be Superbike or even 125 G Ps. I'll pick th e best o ne for th e benefit of everybod y." Ol iver is hop in g his pl ans will take h im and hi s mecha ni c/wife Karen to Europe. " We have no ties here o ther th an fam ily, an d they are as ent h usias tic as we a re." There is a g ood chance there will be a Joh n Lassak Racing te a m competing in the AMA/Castrol 250cc Gra nd Pr ix Series again in 1990. "H o p efull y. we' lI have Robbie (Pet e rs e n ) and (Miguel) DuHamel. " Lassak said at the Heartland Park Topeka event. " We've got t hree Yamahas on order. A lot depends on what HRC decides to do with DuHamel. But it loo ks like Robbie w ill be back for sure right now," Petersen finished second in Topeka behind John Koc inski. Among Robbie Petersen's pl ans for 1990 are a more thorough attack on th e 600cc Supersport titl e. " Next year, I want to come back an d do a proper job of it, " said Petersen at th e Topeka , Kansas, National. "This bik e (h is Supersport-c1ass Yamaha FZR600) is too slow; th e top end's never even been off of it. Frank (Klement ich , his teammate on the T eam OTS end urance bike) says you can get another seven horsepower
