H o usto n . who tu rned 22 abo ut 45 min u tes afte r winn in g · the championship, came back after a second -place finis h in round one to whip out four straight wins and top the o thers by two 'poin ts at the en d for his first ch am p io n sh ip. J ust p rior to th e start of racing Rock y Ro bi nson was presen ted the n u mber one plaque by promoter J o h n Hous ton for being the top rider in no rthern California for 1989. After the first of five rou nds. the fans kn ew it would b e a very in teresting n igh t as five of the p re rac e favorites failed t o get a win. Bob H Icks loo ked on track with a wi n . but a crash in rou nd two and a sternum inj ury p ut hi m on the sidel ines. Robin so n failed to score a win in three rounds th en bro ke a co llarbo ne in a rou nd fo ur cras h . After two rou nds the top three were J oh n Hou ston J r.• chased by Ch arlie Venegas and Joe Led uc. Ho usto n started.off ro und th ree with a wi n over Rob in son then Led uc blew a win by laking the white flag th inki ng it was th e checkered. allowing Robert Curry to slip past o n the las t la p for the wi n. In the last two ro unds Steve Martin ca me back wi th a win over Led uc and Curry leavin g a tie (o r third. Hous ton and Venegas li ned u p against each ot her in ro und four . In round five Houston cra nked it up aga in . pic king up his fourth stra igh t wi n a nd end ing the n ight with a near max of 14 poi nts. Housto n won by two foll owed by Ven egas . as Ledu c, Martin and Curry lined up for the run-off. Martin broke the tapes and was sen t off. leaving Ledu c and Cu rry. Ledu c gated first and kept Curry behind to pi ck up th e win a nd third o vera ll. In th e Support cla ss cha mpin nsh ip Bob Co lli er gated first an d too k th e lead wit h Bobby Hedde n fighting Mark Squadrito for second. After Hedden put Squadrito away he shot after Co ll ier. O n lap three Hedden bore down on Co lli er and with a n ice inside pas s too k o ver the lead and wo n the Support Cha mpionsh ip .
