After a lengthy delay to repair th e track as we ll as possible, th e second m o to eventu a lly sta rte d a t five p .m. under su n ny skies, which meant th at co n di tion s got heavier an d h eavi er despite a co u p le o f short showers before th e race ended. The ex tre me u n fai rness o f the n ew start arra ngeme nt in Wohlen was never more clearly shown th a n a t the start of moto tw o. Thorpe made a to ta l m ess o f the start, b u t the d ifference in distance to the first corner meant th a t by tu rning tig h t he ac tually accelerated u p th e hill a longside Martens and Persso n a t th e h ead of th e fie ld. At the top co rner Thorpe took th e lin e for a lead which he wa s never to lose throughout the race. O nl y Martens co uld stay anywhe re near T horpe a nd by h alf di stance even th ird-place Persson was n early a minute behind. Persson had been under pressu re fro m an ea rly stage fro m Li les, j obe, Lei sk a nd N icoll, b u t h e didn 't surren de r his p lace u n til the ra ce wa s 30 m inutes old. By then l obe had gone o ut with gearbo x troub les, while Li les got p lastic ta pe in hi s rea r brake which rende red it in effective. . 'Fo r L eisk , N icoll a nd G eb oers, the race would decide th e si lver a nd bronze m edals. G eb oers had started poorly from h is bad p osi tion o n th e ga te, a nd from 13th o n la p o ne h e ac tually lost p laces a n d was danger o f n ot finish in g the ch ampio ns hip in th e top th ree. L eisk was a lways ahead of N icoll a nd it was going to ta ke a maj o r disaster to ro b h im o f the silver med al , bu t Nicolla nd Ge boers were locked in co n fl ict in the points table, racing ha lf a la p apart. As Nicoll passed the ai ling Liles for fifth , so Geboers ga ined a .p lace to 13th an d eve ned the score. Nicoll 's n ext vic ti m was Persson and th a t gave h im two poin ts more, but on th e sa me la p Geboers was gi fted a place w hen Pan till a crashed a n d a nother when Karl H elin broke th e exhaus t an d lost po~er, m aking th e sco res even o nce aga m .
