Manl ey held th e lead for the fir st co u p le of laps before Broo ks a nd Mat ia se ich flew by. The ac tio n v kept everyone's eyes o n the lead pair as the Kawasak i p ilot pressured Broo ks in every co rne r. La p six saw the th ird leader of the rnoto as Mat iasevich mot ored in to th e lead. Manley was o n ly a heart bea t beh ind and was no w breathi ng dow n Brooks ' co lla r , but :'I anley wasn 't alo ne as Musgra ve was o nly a bike length behi nd . Man ley stormed by Broo ks. wh ich left Musgra ve knocki ng at Broo ks' door. O n lap 14 Musgra ve also go t by Brooks. T he first heat of th e day saw Ken n y Robert s J r. get off the lin e with Alvarez and J im Da lto n close behind. As Da lto n an d Alvare z fought for th e second spot. Rob ert s bega n to stretch o ut hi s lead. In the back eases, Da lto n mad e a bol d move to pass Alvarez bu t went o ff th e ' tra ck into the dirt. When Dah a n re-ent ered the trac k he was in fro nt of Alvar es, ca us ing him to be black -n agged. Alvarez set his si~hts o n Rober ts but th e chec kered nag ca me a lit tle too soon and Rober ts held o n to win by a nose. In the second Begi n ne r Stock class hea t race. Mark Lo ng got th e hol eshot a nd by th e second lap was (ar O UI in fro nt with nobod y to challenge hi m for the lead. At th e finish . Long was firs t with Mark R ich ards second and Dawn Peck third . The race of the da y was a 16-rider main event in th e Begi nner Stock class . At th e dr op of the green n ag, Alvarez blast ed into the first tum with Ro berts , T odd Bell . Lo ng a nd Da lto n in tow . In th e seco nd turn, Dalton pa ssed Long and Bell to ta ke third By th e third turn. Lo ng charged a nd pa ssed th ree riders o n the insi de to ta ke the seco nd spot, As Alvar ez and Long began to pull away fro m the pack, th e race for third was o n.
