The first public meeting was held in Sacramento on August 10 and the most recent in Colton on August 17. The legislation calls for the closing of trails in OHV areas when they reach a point of erosion that makes them im possib le to repair or the resultant erosion and sedim ent can't be contained on site. In order to separate emotional anti-OHV feelings from fact, the California Off-Road Vehicle Assoc iation (CORVA) hired noted soil geologist, Don Fife, to speak at the August 17 meeting . When presented with scientific facts, many of the preservationists ' theories fell apart. A major concern of off-roaders is that the standards only apply to OHVS, not to horses, cattle, hikers or . logg ing efforts. As things now stand, if a multiple use trail develops a soil loss problem, only OHVs will be restricted even though they may have had the least amount of im pact .
