same la p as Raw and sevent h overall on it s Arai /Fox /M et zel er /HRT/ Widem an- spon sored p rodu cti on Suzuki 600. What mo re ca n be sa id of the efforts of Jim Still, Bru ce Baldus a nd Bob Von Nessen? They consistently ha ve wo n their class all year, freq uently give the superrnach ines fits , and always finish. For this ra ce th ey took essent ially th e sam e motor from the Nelson Ledges 24-Hour and just rode the wheels off it. At one point th e team wa s running fo urt h overa ll before being forced to slow wi th a notch y shifting transmi ssion. In th e fourth hour it became so bad tha t it wore a ho le through Von Nessen 's boot a nd toe and he had to have it cleaned a nd dressed. Despi te winning the ra ce T eam Suzuki members were low key ab out th eir efforts a nd had little to say about th e race. More em p has is was placed on th e efforts of Bray and Smith. Bray having raced here a few times; and Smith having never been here before yet being competitive from th e o nse t. A Suzuki spokesma n added th at through the judicious use of running very soft Dunlops, changing a t th e red flag and again late in th e race in an effort to not all ow HRT's Kurt Hall time to zero in , plus a few lu cky breaks, th e team brings a new persectiv e to th e o verall ser ies a nd it ma y boil down to wh om ever wins th e most races. HRTwas less th an ha p py with th e per forma nce of the soft compound Met zeler fron t tire. Tu n er Da ve Zupan not ed ho w one half of th e tire had broken down , probably he said, due to a sustai ned amount of time at th e sam e tempe ra tu re. H e ad ded that H all had noticed it early in the race a nd that he wasn 't usi ng the tires to scrub speed. H all attributed th e ' wear to the track su rface conditions wh ere patch ing had been done and also in spots where th ere appeared to be a highly-polished racing lin e. Zupan also sa id that th e tir e cho ice won the race for Suzuki a nd was HRT's dow nfa ll. H e no ted they used a sim ilar tire at the Nelson 24-hour a nd it lasted 17 a nd a half hour s, but: " We didn 't expect this to happen on a tra ck tha t doesn' t have m u ch tract ion. For th e firs t four hours the two team s were usuall y on th e same lap only seconds apart a nd th e top spo t was decid ed 'on wh o blew past th e tow er first. The racing was so tight th at in hour o ne o nly three laps sepa ra ted the top 20 teams. This was on a track that had th e start postponed from 11 :30 a.m . to 12:30 p .m . til a n effort to all ow bett er wea ther to go through th e area. The ge ne ra l conse ns us of officia ls a t the trac k was that if it rai ned the ra ce wo u ld be cance lled a nd would be resch eduled for Talla dega. Me mb er s of MARRC (Midd le Atlantic Road Racing Club) u til ized th eir own vehicles to drive around the track before th e even t in an effo rt to clea n any sli ppery residue and moisture which remained from th e previous ni ght's ra in. • ANDY BOWYER HAYDEN RICHARDS Results 65 Stk. 7- 11 85 Stk. 14-1 5 EZRA LUSK MIKE BROWN 85 Stk. 12-13 125 A Stk.
