Cha ndler led all but th e first th ree la ps of Saturda y's l 4-lap, 34-mile final, passin g Vance & Hines Suzuki rider David Sadowski a nd Yoshimur a Suzuki 's J a mie J am es on laps three and four, respectively, before sprinting to a scant .179-second margin of victory. " It v.;as just o u r week end, we co uldn 't do nuthin' wrong," said Chandler, who's sponso red by Kawasaki, Arai, Muzzy's R&D, Targa, Dunlop, Ohlins, RK and Fox . " Behind Chandler and Sadowski came gri tty privat eer Mike H arth, who overcame the challenges of the much-feared Yoshim ura pairing of Sco tt Russell and Jamie James to net a hard-fough t third. HI held bot h those boys off for like seven la ps, that's pretty good, " said an exh uberant H arth, lat er. "T ra ffic helped me. Scott came ins ide o f Jamie and they both got off in th e grass, so I turned it up, I figu red th ey'd ha ve dirt on their tires for th e next lap or so." Ru ssell had neglected to pr e-enter , a nd when Friday aftern oo n's heat races were rained o ut, th e Georgian was relegated to th e rear of th e gri d. Russell quickly joined -the frontrunners, but o n the way he go t into a corner too hot and ra n off into th e grass, taking teammat e J am es with him. Fortunat ely, neither fell. " It was improper setup , too much sag in the rear, " said James. "I started co ncentra ting on making it work the way it was, and by the time I figured it o ut, Scott ca me flying up inside me." Privateer By Brian Catterson Photos by Bert Shepard LEXINGTON, OH, AUG. 6 Wisconsin pri vateer Scott Zampach beat Ohio's own Tom Kipp by a mere .20 second to win the restarted 600cc Supersport race at Mid-Ohio, Zampach took the lead at th e start of th e l4-lap, 34-mile final , but was passed by Kipp on lap three, The "ZMan" tri ed to outbrake Kipp aga in and again a t th e end of th e ba ckstra igh t, but it wasn 't until lap six th at he go t past betw een turns one and two. Floridian Jeff Farmer had been circu la ting in third, trying to get on terms with Zampach an d Kipp. Sh ortly after Zampach got by Kipp, Farmer tri ed to outbrake Kipp at the end of th e back stra ig h t. Un fo rt u nately for Farmer, th e two riders tangled in turn seven , a slow, crested left-bande r lined with g uardra il. Kipp sh ut the door on Farmer, with Farmer 's front tire hitting Kipp's rear, sending Farmer straight at the guardrail. Farmer slowed th e bike, but co u ldn 't stop it, and he elected to jump off rather than ride it head on into th e wall. Farmer flew high th rough th e air, th ankfully clearing the gu ardrail, but suffered a possible broken collarbone. Kipp continued on unaffected. On th e same lap, Shawn H igbee fell in turn 14, smacking the tirelined concrete wall defining the pit en tra n ce. With two busy ambulances, officials red-flagged the race , and it would be restarted from the rid er's then-current race standings. Current class points leader Cam Roos had retired on lap three when his Yamaha's steering damper slid o ut of its clamp. " I cou ld have made the restart, but I was already a few laps down, " he sai d later. Wiseco-sponsored Kipp snatched th e lead a t the restart (m uch to th e j oy of th e g uests in th e Wi seco hospitality sui te high atop th e tower ) and led on his Yokohama-shod . machine until lap 12 wh en Zam pa ch again got by on th e back straight, 'never to be headed. . Zampach' s wi n coupled w i th Roos' and Farmer's DNFs moves Zampach into second in the point sta ndin gs, j us t one point behind Roos, 71-70. Farmer, meanwhile dropped to fo urth with 52 points, while Ashmead holds down third with 54. Kipp lies fifth with 44 points. . "It feels real good," said Zampach after posting hi s long-overdue, first Supersport win. " I missed Ohio last year due to injury." H e also thanked his girlfriend, Nan cy, as well as Vanc e & Hines for th eir extra help throughout this weekend. " It's am azin g; we were turning times two seconds faster than o n my Superbike (in th e heat races )," said Kipp. "It's neat to be out here in front of all the people wh o 've helped me. I rode my butt off but I just couldn't beat my buddy Scott. " Wi sconsin up-and -comer Bill Graef finished third, mak ing hi s first rostrum appearance in the Yokohama Supersport Series. " I'm just so happy," he said, th anking Dunlop, Ya m ah a a n d h is tun er, Tom Ludwig. T exas' Larry Schwarzbach and Florida's J ohn Ashmead ro unded out the top-five fini shers.
