at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, becoming only the fourth rider in AMA racin g

tracker-turned road racer became the
newest (and at 23 years of age the
youngest) member to be initiated
into the prestigious club which also
includes Dick Mann, Kenny Roberts
and Bubba Shobert.

In claiming the Wiseco Superbike
100 win, Chandler ga ve Kawasaki its
first road race victory since Wayne
Rainey won the Superbike crown at
Willow Springs in 1983, and ' kept
alive this year 's string of no-repeat
winners - there have now been five
different winners on four brands of
motorcycles. The win was also
Chandler's first-ever finish on the
Rob Muzzy-tuned ZX7 Superbike.
Chandler rode a flawless race,
dicing with Dale Quarterley until
Quarterley's Fast By Ferracci Ducati
851 broke, then circu lating unchallenged to defeat Yoshimura Suzuki
pilot Scott Russell by 12.71 seconds.

speed of 87.975 mph. A crowd
estimated at 40,000 for the two-day
event watched the proceedings, the
largest SuperCycle Weekend
audience on record.
''I'm pretty proud of myseI£ for
being able to do this (the grand
slam), " said Chandler. "The only
thing is those other guys (Man n ,
Roberts and Shobert) a ll won championships. I haven 't won one .. ."
Russell had sta lled his bike at the
start of his heat race, but overcame
th e problem in the final , launching
from his third-row starting postion
and fighting his way past Canadian
