Taki ng to the Victory track for th e fir st Lime McBride had some difficulty in adapti ng to the different track surface offered at Victory Speedway. O n e la p in to the Fo rm ul a O ne race, Stephens , a Natio nall y ranked 250cc Yamaha rider, found himself in 10th pl ace among th e 75 en tran ts. Stephe ns q uickly ma de his way to the fron t and by the third lap had worked his way to second pl ace behind J oe Brerr Will iams, the AFM 's Fo rm ul a One point leader. After a lap and a half of no n-stop bat tling with Will rams , Stephens took the lead an d bu ilt a comfortable margin by th e ti me he received the checkered flai;. Will ia ms spent th e rest of th e race holdmg o ff ano ther 'Yam aha p iloted by Jerry Ernst. Stephens easily too k the Formul a Two race, leavin g Mark Schubert and Mark Drucker to fight for second place. Harley rider, Dan n y McDonnell jumped into the lead wh ile th e rest of th e pac k scra m bled to try ' a nd o vertake him. Wh ile McDonnell was setti ng the fa st pace, th e McD owell brothe rs, Bobby and Bryan , once again got ta ngled up. Las t week th is happened and Bobby went off o ver th e handleba rs; T his week i t was Bryan 's turn. H e was a llo wed to rejoin the race o nce he co nvinced the referee tha t he was really o kay by riding a hard lap by hi mself , then was put at the end of the line for th e resta rt. McDonnell led off bu t a no the r Harl ey rider, Teddy Taylor . was able to swing ou t a nd aro und McDon nell in a very q uick move that ca ugh t McDon nell off g uard. Taylor took over th e lead spot and stayed th ere. In the 60ec class . IL , J ULY 23 Junior J ackson held o n to a sli m second m oto lead over first mo to wi nner Rich H alstead to cap tu re th e overall 125cc Expert class win in th e opening ro u nd of Motosports Park's Nuclear MX Series . . In m oto o ne, J ackson ga ted seco nd behind Jim Randa , bu t by the en d of the first lap moved h is Kawasaki in to th e lead Ra nda p icked up th e pace and stayed with J ackson while RIch Hal stead, John Ki tsch and Bob Behrens moved up to challe nge th e leade r. At the halfway mark. fir st Kitsch th en Halstead zapped Randa and pur th eir sigh ts o n Jackson. . Kitsch char ged up to challenge J ackson but was turned back and, still su fferi ng from a broken bone in his hand, fell sligh tly off the pa ce. Halstead ra ced by and moved up right on J ackson's rear fender, but Jackson successfully defended hi s lead . Finall y, o n th e last lap, H alstead passed o n a downhill and thi s time made it stick to take the win. Kitsch held o nto third and Bob Behrens mov ed up to ta ke th e fourth spor from Randa. Whe n th e ga te dr opped for th e second m o to Randa shot into th e lead with Jackson. Behre ns and Hal stead o n his heels. J ackson faltered and Behrens got by and immediately cha llenged Randa for th e lead . While Randa and Behr en s battled, Ki tsch moved up from a midpack start to battle with Jackson and Hal stead . Three laps in to the mot o, Behrens a nd Ran da loc ked bars and bo th went do wn, turning th e fight for the lead over to J ackson. .H alstead a nd Kitsch . The tangle moved Randa back to nin th a nd put Behren s o n the side lines .
