Pat Behrle pi cked off the heat but the po le po si tion wa sn 't eno ug h, as Phillips shot o u t to tak e the lead right out of the first turn. Behrle and Don Lewis kept up the effort but Phillips wasn't ma king any mistakes this evening, as he held th e key, loc king them o ut through every turn. Wi th a solid gr oup at th e head of 'he pack Ph ill ips took the flag , followed by Behr le th en Lewis. Starting things off in the SOcc class , a pileup in turn two took o u t the lead ru n ners but a restart fou nd a ll but o ne rider back. After the restart Brian Knippenburg worked his way back the front thoug h favoring a badly banged-up left leg. Knippenburg managed hol d off Ben Bellman , who gave chase for all it was worth, finishing seco nd ahea d of Sam Lowe. In the Open B class the feature was a carbo n co py of th e heat race, as a ll rid ers finished the ma in just as they had in the heats. Tony Burnett was first th rough the number o ne turn, and took co n tro l over Barry Benkert. who rod e hard but cou ldn 't catch th e leader, though he he ld off Fra nk Humphries, who took third. Oliver comes from behind at Willow Springs RR By Richard Thompson ROSAMOND, CA, JULY 23 Richard Oli ver came up from th e eighth position to win th e Mill er H igh -Life Formu la One race, ho sted by the ARRA a' Willow Spri ngs Internation a l Racewa y. The engines roared, the n ag dropped a nd the best race of the year at Willow Springs (so far ) began. Go ing into turn o ne, Doug T oland. ridi ng a Suzuki GSXR750 chassis wit h an lloocc engi ne, Barry Burke. riding a Yamaha FZR750, Lee Shierrs, riding a Suzuki GSXRllOO and Tommy Lynch. riding a Suzuki GSX R750 went neck -and-neck. vying for the first position . Toland triu mphed at first, but not for long. Coming out of turn nine o n the second lap , Shierts challenged T o land, and stol e the lead go ing into turn o ne. Back in the pack, ~oving up on the leaders on e-by-one was RIchard O liver, ridi ng a Yam aha TZ250 sponsored by Ra ndy Mamola Ra ci ng, Arai , Du nlop, House of Wh eels, Kushi tu ni , Alpine S,ars, Kosman, Castrol, Supellech , VP Fuels, O hlins and AirTech. "T he race was at a fast pace. I knew Ric hard (Oliver ) was going be co m ing. " said Barry Bu rke la ter. . Shierts started 10 pull away from the others, hol ding the lead for five or six laps. and i t looked like he had a good chance at the win . Bu, Murphy's Law set in . an d what co uld go '0 30 wrong, did. Shierts was riding a bike with an engi ne that had 25,000 miles o n it and whi ch cost him all of $300. It a lso cost hi m hi s lead position, due 10 its slipping gears. "The transmission does n 't do what you want it to, but what itwa nts to do ," said Shierts . Sh ierts went to th e outside and Oliver, a fter having pi cked off the other leaders, went 10 th e inside to take th e lead spot. Toland. not too far behind th e leader (nor far ahead of Burke a nd Sh iens) saw not hing but th e backside of O liver for th e rest of the race. . Back in third, Burke a nd Shierts tra ded positions a few times. Shi ert s succeeded in h is effort a nd held down th ird for th e rem ainder. Lynch had fall en out o f co n ten tio n and seemed satisfied to remain in fifth . Successfully ho lding hi s position, Oliver soared across th e finish line tak in g the chec kered flag for th e win. Tolan d wi th bar ely enough fuel to fin ish the race, ra n o u t of ~s . at the very end and coasted across th e fimsh line for second. Shierts and Burke, not giving a n in ch , raced dow n to the wire. Shi erts scored a th ird an d Bur ke was left wi th fourth. Lynch, on his own, took fifth. " I didn 't have eno ugh ho rsepower draft by them," sa id Oliver. " I had to ou tbrake them in the turns a nd was back as far as eig hth a t on e point. Stiff com pe ti tion in th e 125cc class make for an exci ting race with th e lead changing and th reat ening during the three loo ps. j ohn Braas ch , aboard a Yamaha, took the reins rig ht at the start. He led thro u gh three-fourths of th e first lap, subseq ue ntly being passed by Kawa saki's Brett H owell, Braasch next had to conte nd with Yamaha pilot jimmy Lewis, w ho zipped around him in the tight stuf[ during th e second loop. Lewi s then pr oceeded real ly put th e heat on Howell. " I kn ew if I could beat jimmy throu~h the tight stuff. I co uld stay ahead of him m the fast stuff," said How ell a t the fin ish lin e. " It reall y wor ked OUL" Lew is was fo rced to dro p back with two flat tires, but hung on for a seco nd-p lace finish . Braas ch finished th ird. Kawasakimo unted Keith Loonsfoct tried 10 stay out of th e dust, especially in th e technical section. H e passed Mickell Brix in th e canyo n and W 3 .i ma ki ng hi s mo ve o n Braasch , bu t it was ' th e end of th e race, a nd he had 10 seu le for fourth. Brix on a Suzuki came in filth. How ell had taken th e lead in th e Vet race earlier in th e da y. H e was pas sed by Miller, wh o had a medi ocre start, up on aligh t, rock y rid ge. Miller wen t on to claim th e win, foll o wed by H owell and Ogilvi e. .
