AMA Castrol250cc Grand Prix
Almost 90 years after Castrol began
formu lat ing oil for motorcycles, the
sport of motorcycle road rac ing has
literally exploded with movies,
television coverage, media interviews and mass magazines meant
for an aud ience of 10 million
enthusiasts. Operating w ith the
knowledge that it is "being up front
that counts ", Castrol is determ ined
to reta in its product's reputation as
t he number one oil for motorcycle
performance.
Castrol 's continued support of
motorcycle competition led to the
support and sponsorship of t he
250cc Grand Pr ix (for merl y known
as Formula Two) bikes in a full
series of races sanc tioned by the
American Motorcyclist As sociation
(AMA).
In a move to support a class of
competitors w ho are prima ri ly
" pr ivat eers" , Castro I is keeping
alive a Grand Prix category in
establ ishing an an nua l point fund
of $40,000, all of w hich is awarded
at the end of . the Castrol 250cc
Grand Prix Championship Ser ies .
Started in 1987, t he number of
250cc racers partic ipating have
increased, as has th e spectator
interest from coast to coast.
The Grand Pr ix racing class has
inherently been t he most competit ive of all the road rac ing events,
the diminutive competit ion bikes,
w ith only 250cc eng ine displacement, h ave regu lar ly ave raged
speeds on American circuits that
come to w it hin one or two miles
per hour of the average speeds of
the larger 750cc and 1OOOcc, multi-
