Farr, Kelly clobber Ventura Motocross OXNARD, CA, JULY 8 The third ra ce i n the Coors/Kawasaki Summer Motocross Series Ventura Ra ceway saw more th an 130 riders thriJl the largest mo tocross crowd of the year. With 28 rideis entered in the 80cc Begi nner class , two sectio ns were ru n. The two winners were Jo hn Farr of Ventura a nd Steve Kell y of CamariJlo . Taking second in th e two sections were Jason Wood and Pa trick Carson. Other 80cc winners were Ji mmy Lavoroi, in the J unio r class and Torey Rolla nd in the Pro clas s. Beginner class 125cc action saw Ro n n ie Bro wn Jr. and David Bradshaw take wins in th e sp ill class. J osh Guggenmos and Scott Brow n took seconds. Bru ce Hiroshima contin ued. where he left off last race by taking the win in the 125cc -J unio r class. Hiroshima was th e Winter Series Champion a nd is out to d u p li ca te the championship. Bria n Staben took second. In other 125cc action, Mars ha ll Wilcox took the win in the Intermediate class . J ULY 8·9 The 3rd An nual Wegman Benefit Endurance Race was won by Andy Schmidt and John Er drich ab oard the Morry 's Bar/Frebers' Goldsmith/Beaver Sports Ha us/ E8cH Ra eing / P ir eJli T ire/EBC-sponsored Ya ma ha FZR6OO. The a nn ua l event, held at Blackhawk Farms Raceway, was ru n in near 100 degree heat, causing some riders to make pi t stops earlier tha n planned. The Red Line Racing entry of Leo Papierniak, Brian Engleha rt a nd Ro n Foye led a t the start wit h T eam BZ, Morry's Bar Racing, Young and O ld Racing, and Chic Magnet in a freigh t train beh ind the m. Clos e doe s not describe the racing up fro nt. It was wh eel to-wheel u nt il lap 18 when You ng and Old rider Kevin Siezewski crashed the Doucas Cycle Honda CBR600 Hurricane in turn two. The machine was very heav ily da maged bu t fortunately' Kevin walked away wilh only a spra ined thumb. ' . By lap 30, ther e were only four teams on the lead lap. Red Line Raci ng 's Suz uki GSXR750 was lhe only GTO bike entered and the extra ho rsepower seemed to be keeping them u p fro n t. AMA Pro co m pe ti tor Scott Zampach was va liantly trying to ca tch Red Line, ridi ng the T eam BZ 600cc Hurricane. Papierniak pitted on lap 40 letting Zampach by for the lead. When Red Li ne re-entered, they were in fourthllace. Morry's Bar an d Chic Mag net h el seco n d a nd third, respectively. The first- hour p it stops were cha ngi ng the order. Mo rry 's Bar led with Ch ic Magnet fourth, Team BZ lhird an d Red Line second. Chic Magnet went a lap down d uring its stop. Morry's Bar rider Erdrich got off that team 's .bike an d onto lhe FZR400 of J us' H avin ' Fun for hour two , rep1 acinl> teammate Les Wh ite who had their ride in ftfth place. Red Line's Ron Foye lost second pl ace to R ick Breuer, riding the BZ mac h ine. A few laps later. Breue r 'rode past the Morry 's Bar RZR to tak e over the lead. The lead was short· lived , thou~h, as Zam pach took over the riding chores a In for BZ a nd wen t out to build a lead o n Morry 's Bar rider Sch midt . In his has te to get some distance, Zampach over- rode the tire s a nd crashed out of the race. Andy Schmid t took the Morry 's Bar ride to the checkered n ag in the fina l hour. No mishaps occurred except for Brian Englehart coming in the pits suffering hea t exhaustion. Leo Papierniak took over the ridi ng chores with 10 minutes to gn . Englehart fell to the pavement o n pit road and was treated by medical personnel in the pits; he was alri~h t after some shade and coo l water. Papierniak kep t the Red Line Suzuk i in second p lace ahead of the Chic Magnet Honda (third ). Os mosis Racing (fourth) and Dynamic Duo (fifth) . Special mention is needed of two novice riders. Pau l Schraith and Dave Doe. who together took Schraith's Ya maha (Team Obsession) FZ600 to eighth place wit h 117 lap s. By getting p ledges per lap and other donations, this pall brought in over $1400 for the Wegman Ben efit Fund. JULY 2 Kenny Kizzar pro ved to be the fastest in lh e Pro class at th e Firecracker Specia l at Boyds Creek Mo tocross. Allhough lhe rain-soa ked track was slick , slimy and downr ight slo p py , it didn't put any dampers on the Suzukimounted Kizzar as he hoJeshot a ll motos of the 125 and 250cc P ro classes a n d led unco ntested to th e finish of a ll. Kizzar's efforts earned him $600 o ut of th e pro payoff pol. Suzuk i-mounted Chad Lou gh and H on damoun ted Cu r t Libbey battled fo r second an d - third in the Pro motos with Lo ugh taki ng the higher finish in mo to one of the 125cc class an d Libbey ta ki ng th a t spot in moto two . Libbey was able to stay narrowly ahea d of Lough in bo th motos of th e 250cc class . Grady Jones d id abou t the same in th e 250cc class as he holeshot mo to one an d led a ll the way to the checkered n ag uncontested , despite getti ng a nat rear tire ab o ut midw ay through th e race . In the seco nd heat Travis T aylor o n a Honda too k th e lead through th e firs t tu m , howev er, Jones used his excellent mud riding skill s and moved into the lead th rough the wh oops. After th e gat es wen t up Ho uston was a longside Mart in thro ug h th e turn un til Harlan Bast Jr . moved h is Godden on (he inside ra il as they shot down the back ch ute. Mart in kept Ho uston wide through th e next corner where the outsid e traction was min im al. Bast was then ab le 10 slip in to second down the start-finish straig ht. As Mart in pulled out a littl e further, Houston fou nd the o utside tracti on ag ain and shot past Bast for second. By now Martin had things u nder con tro l, go ing aw ay with the victory as Hou ston followed. Bobby Hedden found himself in the lead of the Ha ndicap ma in bu t could n 't keep e n o u~ h di sta nce from th e pack as they caught u p wIlh him on the last lap. Ch ar lie Venegas , Roberl Curry a nd Reppert were in a race· lon g baule together, eac h pas sing each ot her as all th ree slowly reeled i n the lead er. Pau l Orlandi slipped into th ird mak ing th e fina l turn to the ch eckered a crowded o ne. Rep perl exited cleanly keepi ng Curry a t bay as they dashed to th e checkered. Brya n Barreu got his first-ever Divisio n Two trophy by ho lding off Steve Mart ynse in the mai n event .
