Will th ey even tou ch th e ground w hen th ey move? A century's passage wi ll look back and laugh at .our sk im py imagina tion s. H ow lim ited they truly are. Bu t th ere are givens; irrefutab ly! And riders th erl- Are we to be'called R iders still? - wi ll gather to adm ire th e rows of polished, aged, silen t mach in es. Motorcycles so ant iquated they wi ll have a gall ery beaut y, lik e suits of arm or at T he Metropolitan. King Arthur stuff! And at th at sam e future sho p there will be a Mo tor cycle Oldtimer whose parents were also oldti me motorcyclists - th ere far away in the decades, p rolon ging the legends of our day. O h, th eir topics will recall the mean politics and raw glamour, th e swee tness and th e sorrow, tha t lace our sport. T hey w ill su m m o n th ose g reat open battlefields w here manufactu rers and privateers go to war. Wh eel to wheel , bar to bar. T heir phrasings, painted absently with th e ant ics of yestery ear, will amuse and give credence to events lon g vanis hed. But we would be proud of th ese distant elders, th ese historic motor m en and women yet un born. And we could well fin d th eir anecdotes truer to th e m ot orcycle spirit th an th eir new listeners' own adventur e. It cou ld be th at now , T oday, is reall y the fu ll-on zen ith of m ot orcycling. And that Fut u re's R oad, w in dirlg through th e ex otics of technol ogy and desire, cou ld be a down hill ride leav ing us ou t of co nt ro l, T h is dr eam begu n in wo nder might awake to a dirge, and th e spo rt's ow n sad demise.
