WERA Toyota/Dunlop Formula USA Road Race Series: Round 4 Hall hot at Grattan By Larry Lawrence GRATTAN, MI, JULY 2 Kurt Hall made it two in a row in the Formula USA Series by winning round four at Grattan Raceway. Hall rode his Dave Zupan-tuned Yamaha FZRIOOO to a 13.88-seco nd victory over Paul Bray, who rode th e Team Suzuki GSXRI IOO en d u r a nce m achine. Chuck Graves, the winner of the first two rounds, took third on his Fifth Avenue Seltzer Suzuki GSXR750, The Human Race Team's Kurt Hall won both the Pocono and Grattan rounds of the WERA Formula USA National Championship. which is powered by a GSXRIIOO motor. It was an even tful day for Hal l. With th e F-USA win he took the points lead in th e seri es standings. H e al so sha ttered Scott Russell 's old track record by turning a 1:25.32 during th e race (R ussell 's form er record was 1:26.83). H all also took a come -from-beh ind win in the third round of the Michigan Grand Prix Seri es. Three of Hall's main compe titors - Mike Sm ith, Bra y and Graves had never seen Grattan Raceway before this weekend. Even tho ugh the course is only two miles long, it presents many challenges and IS known as a local riders' track. The three aforementioned riders all rode in the eigh t-ho ur end ura nce race the day before, but it would be tough for them to make up for Hall's years of sprint racing experie nce on th e track. The chance that a local rider might upset on e of th e seri es regulars was . slim at the beginning of th e weekend and even less likely after Saturday's National Endurance. Fritz Klin g is currently the cream of th e crop of local talent, but Kling would not be pres ent for the F-USA race having broken his foot in an endura nce ra ce crash. In a preview of th ings to come, Hall destroyed the 40-odd bike field in the Michigan GP. Hall had started NATIONAL 600 CHAMPIONSHIP \. AND JUNIOR NATIONAL i f!
