It was igh t and we go t tangled up. Wiping lood off his chi n , Morehead said, 'I 'got hit in th e jaw by my own ootpeg. " Morehead' s Skip Eaken-tuned onda was worse off than he was. he . Sponseller Racing bike ' s xhaust system was destroyed and its and leba rs broken. Eaken tended to t in the eig h t-min u te "regro u p " ime-out, but couldn't get it together n time. Morehead was credited with 4th place (Me rte n s who h ad ratched was 15th) and Estep, whose ike suffered damage in th e inci den t, cratched as well a nd was listed as he 13th pl ace " finisher." Referee Olliges called for a comlete restart of th e race. Wh en the ield, now down to 12 riders, go t the een light it was Davi s taking the ead on the first lap, followed closely y Farris, Ingram and th e closely unched field , or rather what was left fit. Davis held the lead through lap ine with position shuffling go ing n behind him all around the track: econd on laps two and three was arris, but Carr took over that spot n lap four. Then, on lap seven, arker dropped Farris back another otch and two laps later it was Parker nning second behind Davis and in ront of teammate Carr. On lap 10, Parker took the lead way from Davis with a strong drive ff of tum two. As the field was hown the halfway flags at the end f the lap, the order read: Parker, Davis, Carr, Farris, Ingram, handler, Jones, Aseltine and Poovey. . Parker started stretching his leading margin over a Davis/Carr dice that had the trailing duo running handlebar-to-handlebar. Carr took over second for good on the 14th lap and the winners rostrum was set Parker, Carr and Davis. Also seemingly set for the remainder of the race at that point were the fourth and fifth spots. Ingram, who had taken over fourth from Farris on lap II, seemed to have fourth locked up, but Jones, who got by Farris on th e 14th lap, nibbled away at the gap between him and Ingram. With Just one lap to go, J ones got by Ingram and fourth place money ($1505) was his. In gram held o n to fifth , with six th go ing to Ch andler and sevent h to a fading Farris. Poovey, who had a ni ght he would proba bly like to forget, wo ul d head back to T exas with eigh th p lace mo ney ($820). Burkholder and Asel tine rounded out th e top 10. Smiling as th ough he had won the race was I Ith place fini sh er Saunders, who had dropped o u t of the race near the end du e to a mech anical problem. " No t a ll tha t impressive, right?" said Saunders, o bvious ly happy over having at least com pe ted in his first National. After winner Parker, who earned $4000 of th e $29,500 purse, th anked spo n so rs Harley-Davidson, Bell , Tsubaki, H arl ey Owners Group, ITT a nd AIW of Am eri ca, a nd tuner Bill Werner, he let out one of his familiar war-whoops. " And thanks to all yo u fans ," concluded Parker on th e flat-bed truck that Hagerstown Speedwa y utilized as a winner's rostnim. Runner-up Carr said, "I'm still lookin!? for my first Grand National win this year . I'm looking forw ard to th e Springfield Mil e in a cou p le of weeks . Hopefully, th at win will come there." "I used to dream abou t racing wi th these guys,"said third place fini sher Davis, " so I'm happy being up here even with a third place." Commenting on the chances of him repeating his previous week's win at Lima, Davis said, "It's too much to ask to be a winner ' two weeks in a row." Davis, a well-spoken 24-year-old North. Carolinian, spent time prior to the race in the Hagerstown area promoting the event. • Resu lts 2o-lAP NATIONAL: 1. Scott Park er (H-D); 2 . Chris Carr lH·D); 3 . Will Oavis lH ·D); 4 .
