In the 30-m inute, l6-lap G ra nd Pr ix Carter was uncontested as he lapped a ll bu t two rid ers. This race was th e last ra ce of a da y full of racing. DeHoop's Su zu ki was the firs t bi ke to co me alive in the dea d-en gin e start, wi th T &:O Yama ha /Shoei-su p po rted Gary Sailors and Ward less tha n a couple of bik e lengths apa r t. Sailors powered by DeH oop in th e ro llers before th e riders hit the th ird turn, bu t h is -lead wa s sho rt-lived. By th e time the lead tr io reap peared from the back sectio n of th e track , DeH oop had reca ptu red the lead with War d now in second on ly a few len gths back. O nce on th e road portio n o f th e course, Ward q u ickly mad e up grou nd as he pulled to th e rear fender of Del-loop. Sailo rs was beg innin g to drop back as th e pace becam e too 'demand ing. Both DeH oop and Ward soa red off the bi g hillside jump with Ward us ing th e en tire tra ck in an a tte m p t to tak e the lead. A the d uo took different lin es throu gh the sta diu m wh oops, Ward was a littl e faster and pow ered by DeH oop. Ward led th e next co u ple of laps until DeHoop retook th e lead , but Ward again used th e whoops to rep ass. Sail or s was now far behi nd, but still holding down third. Ward almos t lost the lead wh en he m isjudged a jump a nd landed off course. H e qu ickl y recov ere d, but DeHoop was now br eathin g down hi s neck and used th e roll ers in the infield to jump past Ward this tim e for good since time ran o u t before Ward co u ld m ount ano ther cha llenge. Merl e Hammer took th e win in th e Open Intermediat e class , holdin g off Desert Kawa saki racer Chris Cra ndall and Phil Davy. Cra nda ll and Hammer swap ped th e lead in the ear ly stage s of th e race befor e Hammer took the lead and held off Cra nda ll's charges until th e finish. Robi nson an d Ma rti n went wheel-to-w heel down the back chute with neither rider g-ell ing th e edge. As they back ed into turn three Mart in ga ve Robinson th e openi ng wh en he slowed just a little. As th e two roc ke ted o u t o f turn Iour, Rob in son had th e lea d and p u t th e race aw ay as th ey sta rted . th e seco nd lap. Martin followed but was not a match for th e chargi ng Robinson. Tryg Westby on a H PI -sponso red H o nda VFR 750 too k the ear ly lead with Sam McDonald on h is K & N/Be ll/ T subaki -sponsor ed -Ya ma h a FZ R 750 on w estby's rear tire. At the co mp letion of th e first lap , Westby held a one bike-length lead over McDona ld, while De\Va yne Davis on a Suzu ki GSXR750 a nd Step han Wan ds o n anoth er Yamaha had the ir ow n ha u te for third. On th e seco nd lap, McDo na ld pa ssed Westb y and began to stretch hi s lead , whic h he stre tched to six seco nds by th e half-wa y poin t. w estb y. in tu rn , ha d a four-second adva n tage over th e ba ttle ragi n g . between Dav is a nd Wands. O n the eig hth lap , Westb y sta rted to close in o n McDonald, w ho had begun to slow dow n. Westb y too k th e lead o n the 10th lap and McDon ald pulled into the p its with a n ove rhea tin g moto r. Westb y cr uised to th e chec kered flag wit h a 10-second lead over Davis, foll ow ed by Wand. Middl eweig ht Superspor t was the most exci ti ng race of the day. Back in the p its, McDonald a nd Ray shook hands a nd complime n ted eac h other. agreeing th a t .it wa s th e most fun ra ce th ey had ever engaged in, Ra y told McDon ald, " It felt good to race wi th a leg en d. " T he Un lim ited Grand Pri x race saw Westb y ta ke th e lead a t th e sta rt foll owed by Wand a n d Da vis. Sam MacDonal d, now riding hi s o wn FZR600, got it side ways in turn two , co rne ring din trac k-sty le with hi s root down, a nd ex ited tum two in seco n d behind Westby. McDo nald, riding hard to stay wi th Westb y's 750, th en ran off th e trac k entering the front strai g htaway. Wes tby co n ti nued to lead over McDo nald by a bi ke-length a nd th e two en joyed a F our-second ad vantage over Wands and Rob ert Blevin s. On lap five, McDonald too k co ntrol by passing Westby entering tu rn four, and bega n putting a second a lap o ver Westb y. On th e eighth lap, Westby came by th e pits p ointing to hi s cre w - so me th ing had go ne wron g. McDonald cros sed th e fin ish ' line standing o n th e pegs with arms rai sed. in victor y, as Westby h eld on for seco n d a n d Wanda held Blevins off for third. After th e race Sa m sa id: " It felt good to win thi s o ne". Westb y added, "I wish my bik e hadn't gone, sour. I was having fun racing with Sam.
