Kurt Hall (Yam) won round four of fiY p~p~ Wf~LfY The final results from the July 2 500cc Belgian Grand Prix were still pending at presstime due to protests filed at the conclusion of, the rainsodden event. The 10th round of the 500cc World Championship Road Race Series was run in three parts because of the changing weather conditions, but the FIM jury later voted 10 disallow the results of the third portion becaus e of a rule that says a race can only be run in two parts. With the aggregate times of the first two legs add ed together, the FIM declared Eddie Lawson (Hon) the winner. Lawson topped Kevin Schwantz (Suz) by .92 of a second with Wayn e Rainey (Yam) finishing third. Christian Sarron (Yam) and J ohn Kocinski (Yam), in his 500cc GP debut, rounded out the top five finishers. points leader, Belgi an Eric Geboers (Hon) went 15-3. Geb oers maintains the points lead over Thorpe, 211-201. Third is Leisk wi th 186. Officials from lucky,Strike. Gauloises and HB immediately protested the Belgian GPresults and a FIM tribunal must now decide the outcome of the race. Results posted after the three legs and prior to the FIM jury's decision showed Rainey topping lawson and Kocinski. Due to the fact that the race was run less than ,half distance, the FIM also decided to award only half the usual amount of points. Thus, if the decision stands, lawson picks up 10 points for his win and trails Rainey by 13.5 points, 150.5 to 137. American Trampas Parker (KTM) captured his fifth overall win in the World Championship 125cc MX Series in Hawkstone Park, Great Britain, July 2. Italian Alessandro Puzar (Suz) topped the first rnoto ahead of Belgian Stefan Everts (Suz) and Americans Bobby Moore (KTM) and Parker. The second moto was won by American Mike Healey (KTM), followed by Parker and Holland's Teus Visser (Yam) and Marco Van Ommen (Hon). Visser took second overall, while third overall went to Van Drunen. Parker now has a commanding 54-point lead in the series over Puzar, 277-223. Kevin Schwantz benefitted most from the third portion of the Belgian GP being scrubbed from the results as he had crashed on the final lap of the third leg while leading. Switzerland's Jacques Cornu (Hon) won his first 250cc GP of the season in Belgium on July 2. Cornu topped Spaniard Sito Pons (Hon) by half a second with fellow countryman Carlos Cardus (Hon) finishing third. West German Reinhold Roth (Hon) and Italy's luca Cadalora (Yam) rounded out the top five finishers. American Andy Leisner (Hon) ,qualified for the event but only completed five laps. Pons holds a commanding 61-point lead over Cornu, 181120, in the championship point standing's. Roth is third with 116 points. 2 Australian Jeff Leisk (Hon) was the overall winner in round eight of the World Championship 500cc MX Series in Baldasserona di San Marino, Italy, July 2. Leisk went 12 for the overall win, while Great Britain's Dave Thorpe (Hon) took second overall via a s-I tally. Rounding out the top three was Holland's Kees Van ' Der Ven (KTM). Series Frenchman Jean-Michel Bayle (Hon) extended his points lead after winning both motos in round six of the World Championship 250cc MX Series in Maracay, Venezuela, July 2 . Holland's GertJan Van Doorn (Suz) and Finland's Pekka Vehkonen (Yam) tied at 30 points each on the day, but Vehkonen secured second overall via a higher moto finish in the tiebreaking second moto. Van Doorn went 3-3, while Vehkonen went 4-2 . Americans Broc Glover (KTM) and Rodney Smith (Suz) claimed 9-4 and 7-12 moto finishes. France's Alex Vieira (Hon) and Belgium's Stephane Mertens (Hon) split wins in the Austrian round of the World Superbike Series, held at the Osterreichring on July 2. Vieira won the first leg from Raymond Roche (Duc) and Mertens; Mertens won the second leg from Fabrizzio Pirovano (Yam) and Fred Merkel (Hon). Scott Plessinger (Kaw) captured the overall and 250cc class win in the ninth round of the AMA National Championship Hare Scramble Series in Sun Valley, Idaho, July 2. Second overall went to Ron Naylor (ATK) followed by Utah rider Corky Maughan (Suz), Fritz Kadlec (Yam) and Scott Summers (Hon). Team Suzuki Endurance's Paul Bray and Mike Smith (Suz) won round seven of the WERA/EBC Brakes National Endurance Road Race Series, an eight-hour at Grattan, Michigan, July 1. Royale Racing (Yam) finished second and Team America (Yam) was third. Defending series champions the -Human Race Team (Yam) finished eighth. Camel Pro Series competitor Don Martin of Monroeville. Ohio. died on Tuesday, June 27, as a result of injuries suffered when the truck he was driving was involved in an accident the previous night. Martin campaigned a HarleyDavidson sponsored by TJ Cycle and his parents on the dirt track circuit. Godspeed, Don. " Graham has won th e Springfield Mile National six times and holds both the one-lap and 25lap track records at 104.203 mph and 103.061 mph, respectively. Road racer James Domay suffered a broken vertabra in his neck during practice for the Road America Endurance Challenge on Friday. June 23. Domay spentfive days in the hospital but returned to California on June 29, and will be out of action for three to six months. Promoters of the December 13-15 supercross triple header in Birmingham, England, have already started to advertise th e events . Besides " a laser light show, cheergirls, sideshows, live band and fireworks," the promoters are saying, " See Jeff Ward and Ivan Mataisevich. " That's ' righ t, "Ivan Mataisevich of Team Green U.S.A." Papa assumes they mean Jeff Matiasevich. CCM will field a 250cc two-stroke in the 1990 World Championship 250cc MX Series, using an engine developed by Rotax, according to a report in England's Trials & Motocross News. The reed valve and power valve equipped engine is liquid-cooled. CCM of England is presendy campaigning a fourstroke in the 500cc MX GPs. CCM team manager Austin Clews said, "We are firmly committed to the four-strokes and anything we do in the 250 GPs with the twostroke will be extra." Yoko Finland, manufacturer of motocross riding apparel, has set up operation in the U.S . American Yoko, Inc. is located in Rancho Cordova, California. Pro motocrosser-turned track owner/promoter Goat Breker is planning to come out of retirement once again, if he can get some support to cover expenses, to help benefit children 's hospitals across the nation. Breker, wh o rode for the Kawasaki and Honda teams befor e retiring from National competition in 1985, came ou t of retirement at the beginning of last year and won the 500cc Pro class in the CMC G olden St at e National s bef ore mounting an unsuccessful, threerace cam paign at the 500cc GPs in Europe. This time Breker is seeking backing, with the help of Terry Boyd, a San Diego, California, radio p er sonality, to race th e AMA ' National Ch ampionship 500cc MX Series, which begin August 20 in Mill ville, Minnesota , and raise - mon ey for childre n 's hospitals by ga thering industr y pledges for each cha mpionshi p point he scores in the seven- race series. Breker also plan s to arrive at each race site the T uesday before each National and visit ch ildren in area ch ildren's hosp itals, George Roeder had to be smiling after his son, George Roeder II, finished fourth in the June 24 lima (Ohio) Half Mile round of the AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series. The points Roeder earned at lima moved him into 10th place in the Camel Pro Series point standings. George "Sr." finished second in the points race for the Grand National Championship twice in his career. In 1963, Dick Mann won the title by beating Roeder in the point standings by one point, 114 to 113. Then, in 1967, Roeder finished second once again, this time to Gary Nixon. While young Roeder is still looking for his first Grand National Championship win, the elder Roeder won eight. Erv Braun, who'll be announcing the NMA Grand National Championships at Ponca City, Oklahoma, in August, is seeking rider bios to help him with his announcing chores. Riders who plan on competing at Ponca City should send information such as age, hometown, '89 NMA number, classes entered, previous important wins or top placings, and current sponsors. CORRECTION: In an In The Wind item last week, we incorrecdy said that Tony Hendon had signed with ATK to ride the National Hare Scrambles Series. Ron Naylor, from northern California, inked the deal with ATK, not Hendon. Hendon still rides for Yamaha. Despite the desert tortoise being put on the state's list of threatened species by the California Fish and Game Commission, the 1989 Barstow to Vegas Hare and Hound is . still going to be held as planned, according to District 37 Sports Committee Publicity Coordinator Anne Crawshaw. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, November 25, starting at Harvard Road, northeast of Barstow. Entries will be available after the first week of July and must be postmarked no later than August 31 to be accepted. Once again, there is a 1200 rider limit and if more than 1200entries are received, a drawing will be held September 12 with AMA District card holders having priority.
