Last year's 250 a nd 500cc J unior class wi n ner R ya n Carlisle contin ued his string of dominance, but this seaso n in the Int ermed ia te ran ks. T he Honda rider clearly dominated both motos of hi s 500cc heat races , a nd then ga thered a so lid victory in th e final a head of Andy G rider. Gl enn Co m ma ns was in th e hunt after doing well in hi s heat races, but a dera iled chain d uring th e last few laps of the final p ut him o ut of co nte ntion. Greg Sm ith was third. H onda -m ounted Jim Spottsscored the overa ll victo ry in the Open J unior class ahea d of Steve La wler a nd Mike Gi ern. La wler and G iem fought hard in bo th m otos , bu t co uldn' t seem to match the speed of Spotts. Jim O ' Neal was fourth in fro nt of T om Kna p p. Evan s fell to second overall to top Kefa las, Mike Menning and Trevor Meagher. Mike Tripes, co m ing off a 250cc J un ior class win last year, scored in th e In ter med ia te class. Ya m a ha mounted Trevor Meagher holeshot Paul Thede, Tripes, Darren Gal lag her, and Brian Calhoun. Gallagher qu ickly moved towa rd the front of the pack a nd seemed to have th e ov era ll wra pped up un t il mechan ical problem s forced hi m to cras h. Wit h Ga llagher out of the way Meagher sli pped into what was th e wi n ni ng location, u nt il T ri pes bumped h im back to the runner-u p slot. Meagh er chased Tripes to th e end, but th e Kawasak i rid er cap tured th e win over Meagh er.
