c That the First Week of Summer was already the Past, bu t so me thing to go on Forever. T here were a bu nc h of m iles. T wo thousand of th em , on three bik es, across a multi- roads run of seven f ull days. They'd tak en m e from the hig h cliff coast to th e desert, u p over p in ed m ountains, through sultry stretched farmlands, into and out of ju mbo jllmmed cities. It was T he Grand T our! So many Dream Days come true! On a lu xo, road sport, and race repl ica! I gathered in pro bably a m ill ion im pressions, conversed with m ore than a hundred different people, and lived m y own fanta sies of at least ten separate lives. It was a perfect m otorcyclist's holiday! Each day began and ended in th e saddle. It gave m e a Visible motorcycl e m ind. Tim from H ouston saw it, on his way north to Seattle and Montana . H e rode past, turned right arouTld, and came back to say, " You looked lik e you wan ted to talk ." I laugh ed; he was right; I did. We sat under a broad-l eafed s ycam ore, chewing on rides way past and yet to come. His old red was p iled high with bags, covered all over with travel dirt . It had been down, too. H e was a T exas med studen t, away for a sum m er to learn th e rest of the land. H is eyes we re moving; he mounted u p and rode on . La ter it was tw o Germa n riders, H elmu t and Wolfgang, do in g a movie abo ut bein g brothers. Then there was a wo m an w ho'd hau led her two kids out of a dead end life. A bearded guy who jus t wanted to see Oregon again . An engineer running a Th ousandIn-One. A nd a rancher, his name was Antonio, w ith great gold belt buck le and fine clean lau gh . And more. T here was a good friend driving h is pride and jo y, a three-wheeler p lausibly m ore motorcycle than car. And an old ma n from Mexic o who'd come to ride th e American Midwest. Th ere was a f reckled youn g racer w ith a p last ic knee. And a g irl in her twen ties tw o-up w ith her Pap . 2000 m iles worth of people and p laces. I wan ted to get it all down, make a who le book of it, let the rest of th e world in on w ho we motorcyclists are. Bu t, hell , tha t's really kin d of hard to do.
