stood him in good stead'many times last year. He had a win at Donington, and he looked good. The other winner at Donington was another Ita lian, Giancar lo Falappa. Now, there is no doubt that this young man is very fast. But he is fairly wild, too. But beating Merkel at Brainerd is just what he is setting out to do . Americans will have seen Roger Burnett ride at Daytona, and in truth were probably not impressed. But that should not lull them ' into believing that the British racer will not be a very different character at Brainerd. His Honda comes from H RC in Japan, and now that Rothmans has put some money into the team, his back-up will be even better than before. Burnett has a couple of season's 500cc Grand P ri x'experience, plus an 'Isle of Man TT win under his belt. He has beaten the'best in Britain over the years, and this year won the Bol d'Or. Another Brit with an eye on maximum points is Londoner Terry Rymer on the Loctite Yamaha, under the guidance of former British topliner Steve Parrish. Rymer was just another good British Nationa l-racer before he pawned the family jewels to finance his trip to Australia and New Zealand for the final rounds of last year's Superbike com petition. He learned a lot and scored en ough points to take 10th place in the final point standings. Tall and gangl y, Rymer is improving all th e time. He has the ability to be a serious challenger. Paul Iddon, lik e Rymer , learned his business in Britain, and was signed after a good clubman's season by Heron Suzuki . But that came to nothing and ' Iddon went off as a privateer. He did well in the 500cc European Championship, finished third in the 1987 TT Formula One World Championsh ip, and is eager to p ut last season's problems behind him. In common with many riders, including the works men, Iddon had season-long problems with ignition and carburetion. In fact, the paddock joke was that he raced a B-B-B-BB-B-Bimota in 1988. Dayto na fans will remember Anders Andersson at the big Florida race for the past two or three years . H e has switched from Suzuki to Yamaha and the Swede will be in the picture at Brai nerd. Belgian John van Vaerenburg is one of several big-name Europeans who have switched from Endurance World title hopes to the Superbike Trail. Third in the 1987 Endurance Worl d Championship van Vaerenburg, could go well. Bu t the man I would put my .m oney on to ruin ' Merkel's triurnphant homecoming is Fre nchman Raymond Roche. A tough, hard, fearless charac ter from Tou lon, France, Roche has done it all. A former Endurance World Champion, Raymond was als o a top 500cc Grand Prix rider. With larger-thanlife former 500cc World Champion Marco Lucchinelli to look after him on the works Ducati, Roche w ill be a from-runner for as long as the temperamental Ducati keeps on going. T he Italian twin is a rocketship. With Roche at the controls, the bike was fast enough to break the existing Donington Park short circuit absolute la p record held by Freddie Spencer on the works GP H o nda, back in April. ' , Yes, if I have any dollars left after bu ying a handful of hot dogs and hamburgers at Bra inerd, it will go on Roche to win.
