1 could take the lead with a ' good ride in Canada next week." After the U.S. round the point spread became even tighter with only six points separating the top four riders (Michaud 65, Tarres 63, Bosis 62 and Steve Saunders 59). "It was so hot today and there were so many sections," said Tarres. : "I had an earlier number which was good for the first loop because the sections became' more difficult from a ll of the riding. The waterfall section was 'very spectacular but it was not the most difficult to ride. The last sections from 13 through 18 were the hardest. " "I like to ride in the United Sta tes," said Tarres, "It is so different than riding in Europe. Even though the sections are longer and harder, we are more relaxed." Defending World Champion Michaud took third with a score of 102, dropping 30 points in each of the first two loops and 42 in loop three. Michaud said, "I'm still the leader, at least for one more week . 1 had a good first lap except for the last sections where I did som e stupid things that got me som e fives. I don't know if I lost my concentration after that or was just unhappy about my first lap, but I didn't ride very well I after that. Even on the last loop Diego (Bosis) passed me. "I think that 18 sections are too long," said Michaud. "It is okay if they are easy sections but these weren 't easy sections and they were long. Normall y we rid e 15 sections three times. 1 was very tired at the end of the day and it became very difficult to raise the bike. Tarres rode very consistent and this was good for him but not for me. "Last season the championship wasn't decided until the last round in Po la nd," said Michaud. " Maybe it will be the same this year." Eighteen-year-old Finn Tommi Ahvala, riding an Apri lia, scored 31 on the first loop then came back with a 37 and then a 38 to finish fourth overall. Ahvala is well off the championship pace. He passed up round three in ' Italy then carded a seventh in Great Britain and a ninth in Ireland. Italian ' Donato Miglio, ab oard a Fantic, had an excellent first loop of 29 then had bad luck in the last sections on loop two , card ing 45 points before co m ing back with a 36 for a to tal of 110 points a nd fifth place. Migli o finished wi th a total o f 62 Wor ld points and is now fifth in the standings. Great Bri tain' s' Steven Saunders , o n a Fran tic, came into toda y's event wi th a one point lead a fter three rounds. .Saunders first two loops were 35 and 34 point efforts but on . sectio n 14 of the third loop Saunders trashed his bik e's front brake and rode the 'remaining three sections withou t a front stopper. National Champion Ryan Young, riding an Aprilia, finished 18th , th e best finish by an American. Bernie , Schreiber , two -time Wagner Cup winner and 1979 Wor ld Champion, assisted at the awards ceremony. Schreiber led the applause for Nelson Crouch a n d Parker Lowndes for their ' and th eir club's efforts in ma king the. 1989 Wagner Cup possible. • Results O/A: 1. Jo rd i Tarr es (Bet) 81; 2.
