EMGO, Du nlop , Arai, Mikuni, Fox , Sunoco and Tsubaki. Attrition pla yed its role, of course, but of 54 teams sta rting the race , 44 of them were 'still clicking off laps at the end of the grueling contest, a ttesting to the q ual ity of modem · motorcycles and the skills of the teams who prepared them. The d ubious distinc tio n of being first to quit was earned by Team No -· Cam, registered jus t nine laps before their usually dead-reliable RZ350 squeaked a new set of pistons. And although a successful scoring pro test by 3-D Racin g moved them up a no tch over Insu late Ind ustries/ Centralia Ford, there was li ttle else to complain about -by the 44 fin ishing teams. Evelyn Pr it z, h ead scorer and general factotum .fo r WERA, said, "We've been doi ng th is awhile, and we 've go t the scoring down very well. . Bu t another factor is the righ t attitude of the scoring people, and you 've just got to listen to racers whe n theyhave questions. First, they deserve your best efforts to explain what is going on, and second, they just might be right." Keith Pinkstaff's three-year-old track record of I:12 flat was clearly in dange r, with the Zoomi n' Humans and Suzuki both clicking off :14s and :13s in traffic, but an all-out assau lt on the record would h ave to wa it for the following day 's • WERA sp ri nt races.
