Riley also finished second in the 125cc A division. in h is four rides in the two classes he co n tested. His brig ht spot was th e double ,m Ol O wi ns in the Vet Begin ner class, but he just co uld n 't make that formula work in the 500cc Begi n ner class. Hap Smo was going for the lead in the 500cc junior class , but when leader Michael Renner came i nto view there was no Srno as h e had crashed. H e was back in action in th e second moto but had to watc h Renner get the doublemote overall win. Dave Matheson was second overall with his 3-2 performance. Results MINIBO BEG: 1. Schmit sizzles at Spring Creek MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN , MAY 11 Pro Circuit's Donny Schmit dazzled spectators with his fla sh y antics as he ran away from th e com pe tito rs in th e 125, 250cc and Open A classes. Whi le Sch m it u sed th e races as practice fo r 'the Nationals and wasn't scored , District 23 regu lar s scrapped for points. Over 300 riders co mpe ted on th e well -prepped j ohn Martin-managed tra ck. Schmit roosted away in th e fir st 125cc A rnoto while a battle developed over "first " between Rob Engstrom and Pat Riley. A mi stake by En gstrom allowed Ri ley to grab th e lead and go o n for th e win. Bryan Hunt got by Tim Bartylla near th e end of the moto to take third behi nd Engstrom. Engstrom put forth a co ncerted e£fort to pull away from Riley in the second mota and took the win. R iley, Hum and Bartylla filled the top four. john Kelly led the first lap in the l25cc C class only to have Scott Marschel take over fro m him on th e nex t lap. Marschel developed a good lead but Kirk Moreh ead sliced through th e pack on his Wheels U nl imited Cagiva to grab second a nd reeled in Ma rschel o n the last lap to acquire first. Glen Novotny led th e first lap in the second mota wi th Morehead closing. Morehea d roosted by on the second lap and wem on to take the wi n. Novotny was dropped to third on the last lap by Marschel with Kell y taking fourth. In 250cc A class action Burnsville Motorspo rts' Pat Riley roosted to a win in the first moto. Troy Dollansky moved into second in the closing stages of the rnoto after"geuing by Chad Winecke. Chris Bense moved u p to take fourth. Riley grabbed the lead in th e nex t rnoto only to co me u n der a t lack from C hris Hughes. Hughes led near the middle of th e moto w hen Riley dropped it in th e sa nd wash . Action beh ind him was d os e for the first few laps. wi th Chilo Caj alow and Mau Dawson hauling for second. After Cajalow went down. th e top-r u nning positions sp read o u t, and Kurt Oilman moved up to third. At the finish, it was Ander son lead ing Dawson a nd Oilman . Scooter hea t number two wa s fun in th e steady rain, a nd the race for th e lead was mu ch tighter. And erson jumped into th e lead, as Dawson pursued, but had to settle for the runner-up spot, ju st one bik e len gth behind the victor. Overall winner J a m ie Riker jumped to an early lead in the opening 80cc division heat, with Kevin Cunningham a nd Ha us Pohl racing for second.
