At the end o f the fi rst 15-mi le m o untainous loo p , Morriso n was still o n ,h e gas and had a 30seco nd lead. Alt hough bo , h riders weTe riding error free, it was the m istak e of a la pper that ended up costing Morr ison a chance at ta king his firs t overall. Coming in to a one,rdck, off-cam~r wooded ,ra il o n ,he side of a mou ntai n, Morrrison enco un tered a rider crossed up o n the tra il. Wit h Kin g close in his sha do ws, Morrison a ue mpted to pass on the downsid e a nd had problem s ge lli ng back u p 10 th e ' ra il. As he franticall y tried to get back o n track , King was abl e to mak e a successful pass to end u p laking th e checke rs wi th over a minute lead. Afterw ards Morr ison commented, "Roland was ca tch mg me in severa l secti o ns bu t I was faster in th e last section. I knew that if I co uld ho ld th e lead in to that last sectio n, th e win wou ld be m ine." Unfortu na tely lor him the last sectio n was j ust after th e cro ssed-up rider. Morrison sett led for the AA class win and seco nd o vera ll. Action in the 250cc class was ho t. A group co nsisti ng of Mar k Allma n, Rusty Wi lson, j ohnny Edens 'and Ricky Franklin all were within th e span of a minute a t the end of the firs' lap. As Franklin Iell off the pace , the others ma naged to sta y o n the gas wit h Wilson heading into the las, lap with the lead in ha nd a nd feeling the pressure of Allman and Edens. Wh ile Edens couldn 't quite put it tog ether ' 0 make a pa ss. Allman did and scrambled '0 th e chec kers with Wil son and Edens o nl y seconds behind. In th e lOOcc class.
