MAY 7 The day after 600 National Champion Chris Carr celebrated his 22nd birthday, he celebrated in the winner's circle at Lodi Cycle Bowl. The Harley-Davidson factory team rtder had reason to celebrate seeing as how he had set fast tim e, won the Budweiser Dash and then the Expert main at the AMA Regi on al Champion ship Dirt Track Series event. The Budwei ser/Harley-Davidson spo nsored event drew nearl y 2000 fans and 64 racers. In addi tio n to Carr winnin g the Expert final, Randy Bereman topped the ProAm main a nd And y Tressor won the J unior final. . . Carr started off the da y by selting fasl tim e on the slippery quarter-mil e oval at 17.073 seconds. Bryan McDowell was second fastest a t 17.234. Pro-Am hear. were won by Tim Selby, Al . McBee and J oel Huskey, while Kris Kiser and Steve Ma yfield topped the Junior hear.. and Carr , Aaro n Hill an d Ricky Graham topped the three Expert heat races. Prc:rAm ~mis wen t to Bereman and Hi pon. Tressor won the first Junior semi a nd Ricky Sm ith topped the second on e. Carr romped hom e the winner in the first Expert semi as did Bobby McDowell in the second semi. Hereman easily won the Pro·Am main over McBee with Steve Hyson taking third. Tressor cakewa lked the Junior main, wh ile Jimmy San chez a nd Mayfield fought over second until the end when Sanchez took the spo t and Kiser tripped by Mayfield to take third. The Expert main saw former Grand National Champion Graham get caught'on a false starl and moved to the penalty line. Bobby McDowell had the lead on the surt and he was chased by his brother Brian , Carr and the field. Carr got by Bryan on the first lap a nd on the nexl la p loo k over the poi nt position from Bobby . Carr then set sail, luming an eye-opening 16.645 lap on Ihe way to increasing hiS lead to a whoppi ng 8.6 seconds by the time the checkered nag waved. Bobby McDowell hung on to second to the finish with Aaron Hill taking third. After the race, Graham said, " He (Carr) was the on ly guy who could pass around here (this track)." Carr's comments were in ord er: " Loca l boy docs good. I ~ess tha t's how I wou ld describ e thi s win . I Just proved that r can still run with the regular guy s and have fun ." OH, MAY 6-7 American Motorsports hosted an AMA Area MotOCTOSS Qualifier at the Vinton County Fairgrounds where riders endured the bitter wind, rain. sleet and even snow to qualify for upcoming region als, Tom Pugh took the overa ll win in the 125 Stock (12-15) class and finished second to Richard Carpenter in the 125 Modified (12-15) class. Pugh was on top of the field in the 125 Stock (12-15) class final as he was pursued by Travis McCrary and Jerry Fyrre. Fyrre closed in on McCrary and moved by to take . over second by Fyrre a nnd McCrary . In the ModIfied division Carpe nte r was the earl y leader as he scream ed around the course with Pugh in pursuit some distance back. Carpenter went down to put Pu gh in £irst. but he quickly got back underway only to lose one position . Carpenter regained his ro mper sure and closed the gap to Pu gh , then passed him to regain the lead. Carpenter th en ga ssed il a nd slo wly stre tched the distance between h im sel! a nd Pu gh . Midway throu gh the mot a , the riders were pelted by a downpour of rai n. Carpenter wasn 'l fazed as he smoothly and confident ly p iloted his machine arou nd the slick, wet course a nd mdured for the win followed by Pu gh . In the 250cc A Stock class Bryan Jones charf;ed into the lead to be pu shed by Richard Robmson and Scott Hayes. By the end of lap one Hayes had pa ssed J ones to take over firsl but on lap two did a get-orr to drop to last, puuing Jones back into the lead where he remained at the checkered followed by Hay es and Robinson. In Ihe 125cc A Stock class Hayes was the early leader followed by Jeromy Buehl. Buehl tried to move by on the ms ide but Hay es gassed it. Buehl made a successfu l second auempt to move around Hayes a nd took the lead lor the win followed by Hayes. The eventual winner in the 85 Stock (1415) class, Justin Phelps, gained the' lead on lap one as he was chased by Shane Peck, Hayden Richards and Robbie Sturgell. Phelps str etched out his lead on lap two as Richards closed in on Peck for second. Peck went down and Richar ds stalled allowing .Sturgell to move into second. Phelps was first at the checkered followed by Sturgell and then Richards. Richards returned to the 85cc Mod ified (1415) class to top the field as plielps seul ed for second and Sturgell third. In the 85 Stock (7-11) class Patrick McPherso n led the pack followed by Eddy T urner, J .D. Co ll ins and some distance back was Brock Sella rds. The riders jock eyed for positions as McPherson went down to lose h is lead putting Turner ou t front. Sellards dialed in the tra ck to mak e a charge through the pack to take over the lead. Co llins breezed by T urner to move into second. Sellards crossed the fin ish lin e in first followed by Co llins and then Turner. Doug Williams landed fourth while McPherson ended up fifth, a nd furiou s as Kieffer and Ga rdner bat tled for the lead early O il . Gardner Racin g won the even t with Ga rdner , Nick lenat sch and \Vhite on board. T hey were foll owed ver-y closely by Tea m Nevada, with Kieffer a nd Jim Cox doin g the riding. who were thr ee laps down a t one po int with prob lems in the pits. These lWO lea rns were on GTU bikes, Yamaha FZR600s, and fini shed first a nd second overal l as well as occupyin g the top two positions in the GTU division . On e of the highlights of the weekend were the baules between Gardner and Colorado's n ale Kierrer, as Kierrer proved how important it is for a racer to adapt to a new track quick ly. Gar dn er took win s in the 600cc, 750cc a nd Open Superspo rt classes, as well as 250/400 a nd Open Superbike. Kierrer did not go hom e emp ty-handed. however, as he swep t the 600cc and 750cc Superbike races and the new Wace of the Wasa,ch. In the Wace of the Wasatch, La ird White snuck up on Kieffer and gave a n exam ple of how. sideways you can get a bik e, but still go straight . The "J ones Express" took to the tra ck for mot o one a nd was in total ronrro l of the race from the drop of the ga te to the checkered nag. Ken Frankenbery and Brian Doran bauled for second un til lap four when Doran routed. hi s Andrew s Cycles Yamaha in to . second, 24 seconds beh ind J on es. In mota two. Jon es aga in took the lead orr the line with Doran and Frankenbery chasing. Doran kept wilhin two seconds of Jon es for the first five laps when Jones pulled ou t to an I I-second lead by mid·race. Frankenbery remained in th ird with Bryan Lineman in fourth. As in mota one. Jones took th e checkers nearly 24 seconds ah ead of Doran. In 250cc B action, D.J. Heberlein took the double mota win s. Mota one was a stan ·tc:r fini sh routing for the H onda-mounted rid er. John Beil and Shane Smith chased Heberlein through tum on e until a mid·lap crash sent the two riders to the back of the pack. Chuck Emery and Dave Alexander moved into second and Ihird and began a tire-to-tire race for second. As the two riders headed in to the woods section of the tra ck, the battle ron· tinued with Alexander first out of the woods in second place. Heberlein too k the win wit h Alexander in second. Emery held third with Smith worki ng his way into fou rlh by mota's end. Alexander ho leshOl mota two with Heber lein , Bell and Emery charging fro m behind. Heber lein camped on Alexander's rear wheel until lap four when the IWO rides entered the woods and Heber lein emerged in first place. Bell held Ih ird from Emery , who kep t within a tire length of Bell and Ihe final two laps. Heberlein took the checkers first wit h Alexan der beh ind. Bell held orr Emery for third.
