A hburn is predicting that the Secretary will oppose Senator Alan Cranston's Desert Wilderness Bill, Sll. "With the overwhelming evidence that Sll would be detrimental to wildlife, science, military research and agriculture, I am certain that the Interior Secretary will join us in opposition to this unnecessary and excessive Cranston bill," said Ashburn. A 34-member delegation of American drag racers and officials of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) took part in the May 4-5 U.S.A. Drag Racing Festival at Fuji International Speedway in Japan. The two-day exhibition of dJ;llg racing saw the racers do their thing in front of the road race facility's 20.000-seat main grandstand which was filled to capacity both days. Pro Stock champ Dave Schultz. Steve Johnson. Nigel Patrick and Paul Ray represented the two-wheel set in Japan. "The significance of the enthusiasm shown by the ~apa nese racing fans for the U.S. drag racers. and the bond that developed between those racers and the Japanese people. may not be realized for many years." said NHRA President Dallas Gardner. "However. there is no doubt that the groundwork has been established for a viable exchange between the U.S. and Japanese racers and aftermarket manufacturers. We are looking forward to a return trip in the near future." The May 7 Road Atlanta round of the Americari Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) Historic Cup Road Race Series saw the vintage racers take to the track late Sunday afternoon after the completion of the AMA- and AMAI CCS-sanctioned modem races. The move was in response to claims that the vintage bikes drop oil onto the track, although the historic racers were allowed to practice on Saturday and Sunday before the "modern bike" races. Running the vintage bikes last also allowed those spectators not interested in the history of the sport to leave the facility early, thereby easing traffic congestion for those of us who do care. The promotion will jiPpear next at the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, round of the Camel Supercross Series on June 4. Suzuki Country Racing of Norco, California, has developed a 350cc big-bore kit for Suzuki RM and RMX25Os. The kit utilizes the stock cases and uses a longer rod and bigger piston which rides in a pressed-in cylinder sleeve that fits the stock cylinder. According to Suzuki Country's Marty Norris the kit will sell for about $1000 and be available in time for privateer Mike Pascarel1a to use at the first 500cc National, August 20 in Millville, Minnesota, if the AMA approves the kit fOT competition. In order to be approved for National competition a major manufacturer. such as the big four Japanese companies. has to produce at least 500 units for sale in the U.S.• according to the AMA rulebook. Smaller companies are required to produce only 100. and. according to AMA communications manager Bill Amick. the rule is subjective and some things can be approved if enough units are made to meet demand and it helps the sport without creating the need for new rules. Suzuki race team manager Pat Alexander said that he will present the proposal on behalf of Suzuki Country to the AMA for approval if the project works. although it is uncertain if any of the Suzuki factory riders would compete on kitted machines. Suzuki hasn't produced an Open class bike in several y8ars. and Alexander said. "Our guys (management) haven't wanted to get involved in the Open class. It will be up to them whether or not our riders use the kit."
