That the Morning Clouds were cause enough to go riding into the Past. As usual for Sunday I was up by dawn, before daybreak. The air was damp, with a somber smell like crushed leaves. And when I rode away, headed north this time, the pavement in places was slick as tidal pool stones. Something you have to watch for. to keep from being bit. And the road was empty; there were no other motorcycles. None. Only mine. For a dreamy hour I skated along, listening to my exhaust, so mellow and smooth. My shifts, buttery, premature; my braking, relaxed, careful. And by the time the surface warmed and dried and felt solid in my bars I was a hundred miles from home and still alone, still solo. But no longer by myself. I'd slipped into another year, to when I used to ride with my father and with my brother. That family trio on Vincent, Ariel, and Triumph, who knew every narrow I}ighway mile from Here to There and then some. We were in goggles and leather flight jackets - real ones! And when we stopped and pulled our sickles onto their backstands and ate our eggs at some grimy counter, we shared together then a priceless bond that existed only for those moments. It was THAT that came back as I rode these roads past farms and fields. I could almost hear myoid silver Trumpet's purr, the Ariel's thump, the HRD's distinct sure voice. We had come this very way, I was certain. My deepest senses told me so. We had seen these uncut hills slink past, these same rural roadsides blur. And when I felt Remembrance moving in perhaps too close, edging away from where it resides belongs? - I turned up the wick and made big horsepower. And rode on through something, into the present again, stopping at a favorite cafe. Coffee and a sweet roll helped bring me around. I talked to a friend about maybe touring Europe this summer. Then got on my bike and hit it hard. My head was clear now, my command right on, my line perfect. But coming out of a comer I thought I felt someone next to me. I looked, and my own shadow was suddenly there. The sun was burning through on this fine new day. William Edgar Copyright Page 3 Productions.
