egeI1ts, giving Ru...,11 a run lor his money. The C.Be C Superstock races were some 01 the dosest and most exciting racing ever. Spec, talors gOL more than their money's worth watching Russell and James slice, dice, slide and bang handlebars in these rwo events. In C Superstock, Russell led olf the line ~d into turn oue with James in his shadow. James wenl wide in turn two. nearly running 0[[ the track, but twisted the Katana throttle harder than ever to make up for his deficit. .lames caught back up to Russell and on the linal lap Russell was sliding his Katana around allowing james to pull alongside. Russell was able to hold 0[[ James to win by inches. TIle twO riders were the lirst ever to dip into the 1:I7's on 6OO's. Russell's fastest lap of the race was lap four with a 1:17:94 while James went faster on the last lap with a 1:17:83. In what Russell described as one of the tough test races of his career, the A Superstock event, victory wasn't easy. James came to the line mounted on his new 1989 G. . Gonzales/Yoshimura/Michelin-sponsored Suzuki GSXRllOO while Russell claimed pole position (from his heat race win) on his 1988 GSXRllOO. James got the drop on Russell at the green nag and beat Ru...,lIto turn one. Russell allempted to go around James on the outside, but James held him ofr. james continued to lead through lap seven with Russell a mere wheel away. On the linal lap Ru...,11 drafted by james to lead into tum one. James passed Ru...,11 hack going into tum twO but Russell repassed James into three. In the last turn Russell's Suzuki got into a big slide but he was able to hold 0[[ James for the win. In the Formula USA event, Russell did more playin(\" than racing, giving Mike Reffi a free lesson m riding. His playing almo t backfired when Reed's laster GSXR750 Superbike dosed on Russell on the final lap to only be deleated by inches. Reed obviously did not need a riding lesson when up against other riders by pulling orr a win in B uperbike over Jeff Duckworth. Reed, who had a comfortable lead 01 lour seconds by the halfway nag, sensed a closing Duckworth. Duckworth passed Reed on the linallap, but Reed showed his experience and expertise by drafting by for the win on his Triple "R" Racing/Michelin/AGVsponsored machine. Novice ride of the weekend went to David McGrath. McGrath piloted his CBR600 Hurricane to wins in B Superbike and C Superbike, defeating several of the more experienced experts. Both classes had over 25 entries and McGrath proved thaI he is certainly a novice to walch by defeating mostly Yamaha FZR750s and uzuki GSXR750s on his smaller displacement Honda-sponsored by T-ones Sleakhouse, Roswell Honda, AG V and Savannah Kawasaki/Suzuk.i. Novice Jack DuPree also had an excellenmt weekend c1ainllng viClories in D Superbike and Formula Two on his Cycle Specialty/ LockhartID Be DlBieffelPFR-sponsored by Yoshimura, Michelin, The Wax Shop, AGV, EBC Brakes and Phillips 66. Corky's little brother Chance Maughan also look a convincing Mini class overall win by dusting the rest of lhe compelirion from start to finish. The Desert Foxes achieved a victory of their own when they were able to have this race. The BLM had the race can.celed at one time and only afler a hard-fought ballie did they relent and allow il to proceed. A challenging 25-mile loop wa. laid OUl by the dub. Since the area was once the bollom of ancient Lake Bonneville sill wa. prevalenL As the race progressed the si It beca me deeper and in some spots blowhoI developed which riders likened to hitting quicksand. The, banner dropped for the big bikes after all the minis were cleared from the course, and it was Open Expert Brent Fox with th lead at the smoke bomb with Kelly Sorensen and Corky Maughan right on his tail. Fox turned on the gas and exlended his lead but got a rear nat in the process. He still had the lead at the end' of the first loop but stopped to repair the tire and lost several places. Alter fixing his nat Fox pushed a lillie too hard and surrered a high speed gel-off and decided to call it a day. Sorensen inherited the lead going into the ;econd loop but Maughan moved up to challenge. The ballle between the two was fierce as evident by Sorensen's bleedin~ blisters at the end of the race. Maughan gamed the lead for good when Sorensen tried to stretch two loops on one tank of gas and had 10 stop to pUl his spare gas in. At the finish Maughan ""id, "ThaI was one rough course. My arms are aboullo lall off." 33
