"It's so cold ,ha, nobody's ,ires will be working. so we're. all even. This is the coldest weather I've ever raced in, but I doub, if anybody here has raced in any'hing colder," said Russell. Russell should have Wisconsin racer SeOll Zampach. "I talked did a 10' of ice racing ,his win,er, so I guess I should be ready for this," he said. Zampach looked ready in ,he B Superstock race. He was righ' behind leader Kurt Hall in the early goings. Both Russell and Dave Sadowski had started in the rear of the grid. After one lap Sadowski was in fifth, Russell in eighth. The 'wo Atlanta-area riders worked through a talented field and on the second lap ,he race became a four-way ballle for the ,op SPOI. Four laps into the race, both Sadowski and Russell go, by Zampach, bUl Hall s,ill held ,he lead. FirSl year expert Bob Sandy was figh, ing over fifth place with Mike Smi,h, Cam Roos, Paul Bray and Shawn Nicoloff. Sandy dumped his new Kawasaki ZX7 on lap six. With Sandy ou'. Smith opened the gap on his Team Suzuki ,eamma,e, Bray, who in 'urn was leaving Nicoloff behind. Back up front, Russell and Sadowski finally go, around Hall, who considers I.R.P. his home track. Hall commented on Russell's riding Slyle. "Ins,ead of ,he normal hardbraking-then-pi,ch-i,.into-the-,urn me,hod, Russell slows down by Oicking il into the 'urn and scrubbing off speed. Then he's back on ,he gas very quickly. It makes i, very difficult to repass him once he's by you." From lap five to the end of ,he race Russell ex,ended his lead. Sadowski made a laSl-di,ch effort on ,he las, lap '0 ca,ch Russell, bu' came up short. Hall finished alone in ,hird. Zampach hcld off lhe hard-charging pair of Mike Smith and Paul Bray for fourth place. Russell also won the two other Suzuki races as well as ,he Formula USA contesl. His ,otal earnings for ,he weekend came $1620. It looks likei, will be a long season for those going for Suzuki dollars this year as Russell said he intends to hit as many races as he hole position while McDowell, ook the second spo' and tried '0 work around McDonnell. Kiser, who didn', have such a good start ,his Lime, still worked his way up to third by passing Bricker. Rotax rider Sherman Gresham, a fairly new rider in lhis class. maintained the fifth spol. Raceway Park. The central Indiana area was in the grips of record cold ,empera'ures, and the racers had deal with the freezing wea,her ,he bes"hey could. All had sweaters under ,heir leathers, and mos' wore lWO or three pairs of gloves just to keep ,heir hands warm enough to operate the controls. Besides trying keep warm. finding traction on cold tires was anolher chore. Russell found a way to win three overcome all these obstacles _ Suzuki Cup races as well as ,he WERAsponsored Formula USA money paying race. Racers showed up Sa.urday morning, but ,he chances of racing tha, day seemed slim. Three inches of snow coa,ed the Hoosier countryside, and 'he racing surface, although no, blanketed with snow, was covered in an icy slush. La,er in ,he day some prac, ice was held, bu, the scheduled endurance race was pos, poned un,il Sunday. On Sunday morning, WERA officials were faced with large pa'ches of ice on the track. Inventive comer workers from ,he local BMW club cleverly used blow ,orches melt the ice, then swept the water 0(£ the track. The firs' race of the day was 'he Dave Essex Memorial Endurance. TBA Racing, wi,h Indianapolis racers Ward Cook and Ned Hart, won 'he evenl whjch raised $1425 for ,he childen of Dave Essex.
