I.astafka rips Gran PrIx MX By Peggy Adamic Yamaha-;.mounted Craig Canoy ran near the front of the 250cc Pro class at Perris Raceway, but slipped back and finished fifth overall. McGrath masters Perris MX Pros By David Procida PERRIS, CA, APR. 8 Back on the ttack following injuries, Jeremy McGrath put his Kawasaki KX250 into the winner's circle by winning today's Pro class at P'erris Raceway, The first moto saw Honda-mounted Mike Hooker take the holeshot over Yamaha rider Crai~ Canoy and McGrath. Canoy was pushmg hard in an attempt to get by Hooker, while behind the pair McGrath was waiting to strike. Moving up from a midpack Staft was ATK-mounted Willy Musgrave who was running fourth in front of Erick Hilton. Up front, Canoy attempted an outside line in the mud which backfired by allowing McGrath to close in and pass the Yamaha rider. McGrath then quickly closed in on Hooker and made attempts to pass Hooker, but Hooker held his line. Then on the fourth lap, McGrath pulled alongside Hooker as the pair rocketed down the front straight. Hooker got on the brakes hard and hit a bump, belting the back end of his CR sky high. McGrath saw his chance and squared the comer, then dove to the inside of Hooker and took the lead. Hooker got his CR back under control with ATK-mounted Musgrave closing quickly. - Musgrave eventually reeled in Hooker and had control of second as he set his sights on the leader. ' With Musgrave a full sttaightaway behind McGrath. and pulling away from Hooker, all eyes were focused on the battle for third . between Hooker and Hilton. Hilton had been moving up the entire molO and was now glued to Hooker's rear fender. The twO riders pushed and shoved for three laps before Hilton drove to the inside, cutting across Hooker's line. The two collided with Hooker going down and Hilton moving into third. As the moto came to a. close, McGrath still had a comfortable lead' over Musgrave, who led Hilton. Hooker remounted and finished in fourth over Canoy. As the gate dropped to start off moto two, Hooker jumped out to an early lead with McGrath and Musgrave out in front. By the second lap though, McGrath bad slipped by and was pulling away. Musgrave needed the win LO take the overall and was doing· everything in his power to get by Hooker. On the fourth lap, Hooker bobbled and droeped back to the rear of the ~ck, moving Hilton into third Musgrave still bad a long way to go and McGrath wasn't waiting for anyone_ Hooker, meanwhile, was back underway and closing in on Hilton. By the seventh lap, McGrath was lapping riders, while Musgrave was held back by a small pack of backmarkers and lost his chance of catching McGrath. McGrath took the win, while Musgrave had to st'ttle for second Hilton ddended third down to the finish, while Hooker and Canoy rounded out the top five. RHUIta 40 25-29 BEG: 1. Dresser strikes at PalmyraMX By Bill Robinson PALMYRA, NY, APR. 9 Western New York's motocross season opener at Hog Back Hill saw "Big Ben" Dressner take the overall win in the 125cc Schoolboy class. The Southern Tier-Cycle-mounted Suzuki rider was making his debut on a 125cc bike. In the first moto' Donny Schmidt shot 10 the front of the pack witlt Dressner getting away 'about midpack. At the end of the first lap the uphill whoops ate up Schmidt who was out of control and went down. Gary . Squier then inherited the lead and was pushed 10 the checkers by Dressner. The second molO saw Schmidt hang on for the molO win, but Dressner's 2-2 finish took the overall win. A.nother SOuthern Tier Cycle-sponsored rider, Jason Ragan, put IOgether 1-1 molO wins in the 125cc Amateur class to take the overall win. The first molO saw Ragan launch his Suzuki to the front with Honda-mounted Jamie Goodno close behind. Goodno managed to stick a rUe under Ragan on a few of the hairpins, but this just seemed to light Ragan's fuse. Clearing a set of doubles was the difference between Ragan's I-I finishes and Goodno's 2-2 finishes. If Bryan Years' perfomtance on his 250 and 500cc Honda in the Expert class are an indication of what's to come, the 250cc and Open Experts are in for a long season. The young Honda rider crushed the Open class with back-ro-back moto wins. The 250cc class saw Years finish second to Dean's Cycle Sales Rider Andy Stacy in the first moto_ In the second moto Years kept it all together for first and the overall win. R-.Its OPEN NOV: 1. Despite the steadily falling rain and the cold temperatures, 99 faithful motoc:rossers turned out for the event. Kawasaki-mounted Mark Pahanish beat the field of A class riders in moto one as he held off the driving attempts of Lastalka t1troughout the seven-lap race while Ken Frankenbery held third In malo two, Lasta£ka took the wire-ta-wire win with Pahan, ish camping on his back tire for the entire race. Frankenbery held third until mid-race when John Hill routed his Honda around him. Hill held a slim bike length lead over Frankenbery at the checkered flag. I AXO's Jim Hale broke a two-rider tie [or the overall win via a second..moto victory to take home the gold in the Vet Novice class at Perris Raceway, In molO one, RSR's Rusty Spencer grabbed the holeshot as Race Tech's Dennis Burns moved into second with SCR rider Wally Moore right on his heels. Greg Bebeck put the heat on Moore and was rewarded wiLh third as he slipped by. Moore made a repass after studying Bebeck's lines for a couple of laps, with Bob Zimmon and Hale also slipping by the Yamaha pilot. Rebeck recovered quickly and powered by both Zimmon and Hale, closing on Moore. As t1te molO wound down, Hale pressured' Zimmon, forcing the John Burr Cycle-sponsored rider into a costly error. Spencer took the checkered to end the molO, followed by Bums, Moore, Rebeck and rounding out the top five was Hale. Spencer again rocketed out of the gate with the pack in hot pursuit at the start of mota two but dipped a bank and went over the pull away. Moore was once again runtting allhefrontof the pack with Hale, Tom Rutten . and Rebeck only a short distance behind Halfway through lap four, a kicker jump sent Minnick. over the bars, handing the lead to Hale, who had passed Moore. This put Bebeck into second as Moore dropped off the pace. Moving up from a mid-pack start were Jim Stentz and Jim DeFord. and their duel took them up inta the number three and four slots. The positions remained the same to the end with Moore holding on to make the top five complete. When the results were tallied, two IOtals came 10 six - Bebeck's 4-2 and Hale edging him out with a 5-1. In Ihe Vel Expert class, Paul Thede overcame a dead-last start in mota one to finish second behind Bob Rutten, who went wire-to-wire for the win. MaLO two saw Thede take his turn at the helm in a wire-to·wire romp for the overall win. Rutten finished third in moto twO behind Alan Olson. Ingersoll zeroes in on Hobo Enduro win By Kit Palmer LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, APR. 9 Ka wasaki rider Jason Ingersoll climbed back to the top of the mountain with the overall win at the Southern California Enduro Club Hobo Enduro held on Anderson Dry Lake. Ingersoll was the only rider out of more than 300 entrants to zero the two-loop, 7o-mile course, and he dropped only a total of 45 seconds at the tie-breakers. The Vet 200cc AA rider, Ingersoll, finished a full point ahead of his nearest competito.r, Kawasaki rider Mark Cook. Cook, who also captured the Vet 250cc A class victory, carded a 1.78, edging the third place overall finisher, Tony Rickard, by one second, 1.79. Rickard finished second in the 200cc AA class. Rounding out the top five was first Vet 250cc AA rider Scott Crawford and first FourStroke rider Randy Bennett. Crawford was the first of the threes at 3.175, while Bennell finished.eight seconds back at 3.183. The first loop featured two special tests and a couple of clever possible check locations. Most of the AA and A riders managed to zero these sections, setting the stage £0J' the deciding second loop. Checks seven and nine were the determining checks in the second loop and for the outcome of the whole enduro. A check-in at three miles 'inlO the second loop kept everybody honest and three miles later was the ever-so important, special test, check seven. Ingersoll was the only rider to zero the check with a score of 13 seconds dropped (43 seconds into his minute). However. Cook came as close as you can get without ~etting a zero. Cook, who was riding on mlnute 35, arrived at check seven at 36:00 and took a frustrating one point .(and 30-seconds) point loss. RickaTd rolled through the check 23-seconds late. The only chance both Cook and Rickard had of catching Ingersoll was at check nine, the last special test section. But Ingersoll put in'a flawless ride in the section and carded a three-second point drop; Rickard dropped five seconds and Cook 25 seconds. Kawasaki-mounted Scott Sinnig iopped the 200cc A class with a score of 3.215 for sixth overall. Finishing just four seconds behind Sinnig was the Vet Open A winner, Bob Seitz, riding an ATK. Eighth overall fell to Honda rider Steve Bebeck who claimed the Vet 250cc A class victory, one point ahead of Clint Diaz. Ken Lewis, Jr., who took second in the Vet 250cc AA class, rounded out the top 10. Taking first place in the Women's division at 83rd overall was Kawasaki-mounted Dana Bell. Fint Senior was 250cc A rider Jim Rucker
