June 9 at 5 p.m. White leads Pickett FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CAU: 612-475-7500 HScharge By Rider Writer FORT PICKEIT, VA, APR. 2 David White, on a Pro class-sponsored Cagiva, took the overall victory by less than a minute as 1988 Grand Champion Roland King desperately tried to. reel him in at the season opener ferr the Tucker-Rocky/BelllHavolinel SmisalolAXO/MeuelerlBoyesenlThor/Malcolm Smith/Scou/Pj-l/RokolAcerbissponsored Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series, held on the Camp Pickett military base. Although King was cutting into White's lead as the minutes ticked away, he couldn't quire pull it oU and had to settle for second overall. Both riders rode the AA class which included all of the top series riders including 1987 Grand Champion R.J. Faddis. who fell oU the pace in the early going_ During the first two laps, WIll te had to hold oU the advances of ATK-mounted Steven Anhur, until Arthur lost a footpeg on the last lap to fall back in the pack. Coming in third overall was jeff Blankenship, who worked his way up from sixth place going into the last lap to pass and hold oU Kawasaki rider Dwyane Miller. All of the top six overall riders were from the AA class. In the lOOcc class, Commonwealth KawasakilHavoline-sponsored Robbie Felts blasted oUlof lhe slaning gale lo run away with the win. The real battle was for second as Kawasaki riders Wesley Moran and Charley Lewis rode close to finish in that order. The l25s came 0[£ the line and first into the woods was Casey Cycle City/Havolinesponsored George Greer on a Honda with Suzuki rider joel Burgess and Chuck King in close hot pursuiL By the end of the first lap, Greer saw his lead vanish along with his bike in a deep mudhole. Although he was quick to get free, that's all the incentive Burgess needed as he stayed on the gas to hold the lead to the finish. King stayed upright to finish third. In the Open class, Marty Hensley put a bad start quickly behind him along with the competition to take the lead away from Lee Sutton by the end of the first lap. On the last lap, Sullon fell out of contention and into ninth while Bobby Wilt and Spanky johnson battled back and forth until they found themselves sitting in the second and third positions. In the Senior class, Mark's Power Equip. KTM riders jim Thom"""n and Robert Cox turned out to be the roam attraction. Cox led at the end of the first two laps but found he had his hands full as Thompson stayed only a second or two back. After the race Cox commented, "I would be leading and get stuck and jim would pass. The be would have a problem and I would pass. We did this all day long." By the end of the race. Cox was the one to get stuck last as Thompson made the final pass into the winnus circl~. R....1ts 01A: 1. David WMoICoe). M; 1. Roland King (Han~ 2. Jeff B _ i p ISuz); 3. Dwyo. . MiII.. !Kow); 4.
