Pre-race local favorite Ron Nay/or (65) dropped out on the first lap with a' seized engine. Honda-mounted Duke Dowell charged through the bushes and trees to overall and second place in the 250cc class. clai~ third .12 We hit the pavement topped out, and I couldn't really pull him out of the turns. So I wheehed over a curb, rode across some gravel, and wheelied another curb and came up in front of him." While all this was happening, Naylor was pushing his 1988 RM250 back to the pits. Naylor, who had rebuilt the motorcycle yesterday, got a poor start and then seized in turn three. A true sportsman, Naylor helped local riders change flat tires in the pits and surprised Roeseler when he helped Roeseler pit on lap two. With 11.7 miles behind him, McKenna led Roeseler, Billy Grossi, Ron LaPointe, Paul Funaro and Donnie Simone. But Roeseler came back and passed McKenna halfway through the first lap, then McKenna reclaimed the lead when Roeseler pulled into the pits at the end of lap one. Starting lap two, McKenna led Roeseler, LaPointe, Funaro and DowelL Both Grossi and LaPointe retired before the race was over. McKenna's lead came to an end, once again on lap two. "I just ran into a couple of problems," said McKenna. "I fell down once or twice. Then I got stuck on a hill with a bunch of Novices. I pushed all the way to the top. After that, I was lucky to finish. I could barely pull myself on the bike." Roeseler held his lead to the checkers, taking the overall and the 250cc A titles for the day. Roeseler thanked Team Green, Malcolm Smith, Scott, Pro Circuit, DUl}.lop, Trick Racing Fuel, Bel-Ray, Tsubaki, CTi knee brace, Acerbis, and NGK for their support, and then described the course as fun, with a bit of variety in the California terrain. Knowing the terrain was an important advantage for local racers and flat tires were quite common, . Dowell, who used a large gas tank and flat-proof tubes to stay out of the pits, had planned well for the evenL "I had a good time," said DowelL "They did a good job on the layouL And during the race, I was thinking some of these guys have got to drop out with flats. There are lots of sharp rocks out there." McKenna also held his position throughout the remainder of the race, claiming the Open A class victory. Dowell, who had trouble developing a rhythm after a poor start, seemed to warm up as the day went on. On the last lap, Dowell passed. Funaro to take third overall, second in the 2liOcc A class. Funaro held fourth to finish thirq in the 250cc A contest, 43 seconds ahead of 125cc A class winner Ed Marchini. Sam Saracco, Simone, Jason Dahners, Veteran A class winner Duane Scott, and Derrick Personette rounded out the top 10. In the Senior A class battle, Jerry Fouts topped the National division, which uses age requirements that are different from AMA District 36 rules. Eddie Egyed won the District 36 Senior class, while Louie Marshall and Fred Sumrall earned the Super Senior class honors in the National and District 36 categories. Behind the A class riders overall B winner was Darrel Duddley, riding a Honda 250. Duddley finished the race 27 minutes behind Roeseler, which was faster than all but 17 of the A class winners. Duddley earned the overall and 250cc B honors ahead of Open B class winner Ron Jones and Four-Stroke B victory John May. Second and third place 250cc credits went to John Damele and Joe Newman, who rounded out the top five B class positions. The C class also had an entry among the .top 20 finishers. Overall and 250cc C class honors went to Dan . Reger who topped all but 18 of today's riders. Open C class winner Lyle Roe, 250cc pilot Paul Britton, Open C rider Mark Kirchem, and I25cc C class winner Eric Shipman rounded out the top five. Other C class winners were Eric VonUrff (Veteran), Alvin Parry (Senior), Chris White (Four-Stroke), and Ron Achuletta (Youth). The Shasta Dam Grand Prix proqloters wanted to acknowledge the efforts of some of those people who helped put together today's event, including Miller Beer, Scott USA, Gatorade, Acerbis, the Redding Days Inn, Suzuki, Specialized and Pepsi. The Redding Lions club worked the gate and operated concessions, collecting money that will be used to help charities in the Redding area. • Results 0/A A: 1. larry R.....1er (!tawt 2.
