Doug Dubach (16) led both 250cc motos and was difficult to pass. Johnny O'Mara (20) tries to get by on his way to third overall. Jimmy Gaddis (39) chased 125cc overall winner George Holland for most of moto one and ended up f'lfth overall in his best ride to date. faded near the end though but still held fifth at the finish as Gaddis charged up to his tail after steadily working through the pack. Bradshaw worked his way up from a poor start to claim seventh, Kehoe was eighth after battling Suzuki teammate Davis for much of the race, and Mike LaRocco passed Davis in the closing laps for ninth. 260cc Dubach holeshot the first moto while O'Mara, Tichenor, Stanton and Ward passed Mike Fisher on the first lap to make a close top five. Over the next lap the five stayed together and there was several position changes. On the third lap, Dubach Dew too far off a jump, missed his . line in the next comer and O'Mara and Stanton were through. Stanton then quickly passed O'Mara as Ward also got by Dubach. By the fifth Qf 15 laps Ward was in second a few bike lengths behind Stanton, and they both began to leave O'Mara. Lechien had moved in on Tichenor's rear fender, and the two riders pulled up on Dubach. For several laps the three would battle until Lechien eventually worked by Tichenor then stuffed Dubach. Out front Ward moved in on Stanton, closely following the Honda rider for several laps before .making his move on lap 10. Once into the lead, Ward pulled away and won by a few seconds. "I figured I'd wait and let him tire," said Ward. "I didn't want to pass him too early and show him all my lines." But Stanton says he didn't tire, he had other things in mind. "Jeff and I were really going at it, and he pushed me," said Stanton. "I felt I didn't have to beat him in the first moto, so I didn't try to push it and saved myself for the second . moto." O'Mara was a distant third over Lechien, and Tichenor passed the fallen Dubach in the last turn for fifth. After a slow, poor start, Mickey Dymond got on track around midmoto and charged up to take seventh. Dubach was the fast starter again in moto two and led for a lap before Stanton passed him. Ward also got by and O'Mara closed in also. Tyson Vohland held fifth over Tichenor, Fred Andrews and Lechien. Stanton and Ward once again pulled away, and Ward got the lead when Stanton went off the track on the fourth lap. "I landed in a rut and almost highsided," said Stanton. Dubach and O'Mara battled again, and it wasn't until lap seven that it ended when O'Mara passed then pulled away. Tichenor got by Vohland and Lechien passed Andrews, then the race settled down for several laps. Ward looked like he had things under control as he maintained a few seconds on Stanton. But then on lap 12 Stanton began to charge and was soon on Ward's rear fender. Two laps later, just after they got the signal for two laps to go, Ward had trouble in an uphill whoop section, Stanton closed in and then stuffed him in the next comer. Ward initially fought back, but then more mistakes drop~ him back several seconds at the fmish. "The swaps in the whoop section threw me off," said Ward. "Then I kept making too many mistakes and that was the race." "I had to work double hard to catch and pass Ward that moto," Stanton said. But after all the work Guy Cooper passed Schmit in the second 125cc moto but couldn't catch Holland and ended up third overall behind Schmit and Holland. he wasn't even tired. "I could've run off the track." "I had trouble getting by Dubach both times, and by the time I did Stanton and Ward already got away," said O'Mara. "I was third best today." Dubach was fourth after O'Mara and felt good about his ride. "The last couple of weeks I've been frustrated by mistakes," Dubach said. "But this week I went and had a good time. I rode against the track instead of other riders." Tichenor was fifth and Vohland maintained sixth, while Lechien couldn't mount a charge this moto and was seventh over Dymond. • Results 125: 1.
