Check your local listings for times and channels. 0') 00 0') ~YP4lP41 Wf4lLfY At presstime Monday, ApJil 17, road racer Bubba Shobert was still in critical, but stable condition with head injuries at the San Jose Medical Center in Santa Clara, California, as a result of his cooloff lap collision with Kevin Magee in the U.S. GP at Laguna Seca on April 16 (See full report in U.S. GP coverage that begins on page 6). According to Christie Welter, the public relations director at the medical center, Shobert received a second CAT scan on Monday morning. "It showed that nothing has changed which is good:' Welter said. "That means there's no new bleeds." Shobert is unconscious and is hooked up to a brain monitor. "We will keep him sedated for another 36 hours," Weher said. "The longer we can control the problem with medication, the better. We won't know the extent of the damage for four or five days. I don't know much about motorcycle racing, but we've received calls from all over the world. He is apparently a favorite of a lot of people." Great Britain's Dave Thorpe (Hon) was the overall winner in round two of the World Championship 500cc MX Series in St. Jean d' Angeley, France, April 16. Thorpe posted 3I moLO finishes to claim the win over series points leader Belgian Eric Geboers (Hon), who went 1-5. Third place went to Belgian Jacky Martens (KTM) with a 3-2 score. In the series point standings, defending World Champion Geboers has 58 points followed by Thorpe with 47 and Martens with 45. 2 California'. Hungry VaHey State Brit Jeremy Whatley (Suz) captured the overall win in the opening round of the World Championship 250cc MX Series in Payeme, Switzerland, April 16. Whatley won the first moto and was the runner-up in the second moto, topping fellow countryman Rob Herring (Suz), who went 3-4. Third went to Italy's Michele Fanton (Suz) via an 8-2 tally to complete the Suzuki sweep, which hadn't been done since 1974 when Joel Robert, Gaston Rahier and Sylvain Geboers shared the podium at the German GP. The defending World Champion, Holland's John Van den Berk (Vam) won the first moto and finished 18th in the second. Americans Broc Glover (KTM), who was second fastest in timed practice, and Rodney Smith (Suz) scored few points in Switzerland. Glover went 12-17 with bike problems, while Smith carded a 5-DNF. Frenchman Jean-Michel Bayle (Hon), the 1988 125cc MX World Champion who broke his arm March 23 while practicing at home after spending the early part of the 1989 season racing in the United States, . took part in timed practice at the 250cc GP in Switzerland and qualified sixth fastest but decided not to race due to pain in the injured arm. American Honda recently signed Courteney Cox, star of TV's Family TI8S, to a two-year contract to help promote responsible use of motorcycles. Ms. Cox will be featured in what Honda says is a "unique and impactful" TV commercial which will debut April 22 during ESPN's telecast of the U.S. 250cc GP and will eJso be aired during the following day's NBC telecast of the U.S. 500cc GP. BMW of North America has issued a recall of approximately 6200 motorcycles LO correct a possible defect in the brake li~t switches. The motorcycles which are potentially affected are certain twincylinder, R Series models produced between 1985 and 1989, of which 5% are estimated to actually contain the defect. Owners of the affected motorcycles have been contacted by BMW and notified that the repair will be performed free of charge. No accidents or injuries have been reported to BMW as a result of this potential defect. In round two of the World Championship 125cc MX Series in Moron, Spain, April 16, Holland's Dave Strijbos (Suz) won both motos, while Italian Alessandro Puzar (Suz) took second with a 25 score. Third went to French rider Vves Demaria (Vam) who went 52. American Trampas Parker (KTM) went 4-3 for fourth overall and Holland's Pedro Tragter (Suz) went 3-4 for fifth. Americans Bobby Moore (KTM) and Mike Healey (KTM) went 6-7 and DNF10. Strijbos leads the series with 72 points over Parker's 68. Puzar is third with 60 points. Healey lies seventh in the standings and Moore is currently ninth. Team Pepsi Suzuki's Kevin Schwentz, in an interview conĀ· ducted by Australian Motorcycle News, said his '89 GP road race contract is based on "an incentive scheme for points and winning the championship. If I win the championship and haH a dozen GPs, I'll probably make around $2 million, and if I finish fifth~ probably around &1.4 million." Larry Roeseler (Kaw) was the overall ,winner in round five of the AMA National Championship Hare Scrambles Series in Redding, Cali'fornia, April 16. Second place went to Eric McKenna (Hon), who was (ollowed across the finish line by Duke Dowell (Hon), Paul Funaro (Hon) ahd Ed Marchini (Suz). PROMOTED: Mitch Morgan, to senior disuict sales manager for northern Illinois and meuo Chicago by American Honda; Morgan was formerly the disuict sales manager in southern Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia; Morgan's former district will be handled by Mike Kehne. Scott Plessinger (Kaw) captured the overall win in the third round of the AMA Wiseco/Vamaha Grand National Cross Country Championship Series in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, April 16. Second place went to seven-time National Cross Country Champion Ed Lojak (Yam) with third going to Scott Summers (Ho.n). From the "Where are they now?" department comes word that former MotorCycle Weekly newspaper and Popular Cycling magazine editor Tom Beesley is a staff photographer with the Times Record News, a daily newspaper in Wichita Falls, Texas. Joel Albrecht won his second consecutive Kawasaki Race of Champions, in which top Mini class riders from the various National Motosport Association (NMA) regions compete on identically prepared stock Kawasaki KX80s, at the 18th Annual NMA World Mini Grand Prix held April 14-16 at Las Vegas Motocross Park near Las Vegas, Nevada. Tommy Clowers (Kaw) won both the 80cc Stock and Modified Expert classes while Buddy Antunez (Suz) captured the Super Mini title. In the Pro classes Jeff Emig (Kaw) swept the 125 and 250cc Stock and Modified classes and Tallon Vohland (Kaw) racked up the gold in the 500cc division.
