Brown blasts Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, APR. 2 During the 1988 speedway season, Scotty Brown never round the way to victory circle. Early in the 1989 campaign, he has been there twice. the latest comlng alter his win in the Handicap main at Speedway USA's season opener. Brown's journey to vicLOry circle on the wind-blown Sunday afterl100n event was ~nything but easy. On the way, he crashed tWIce, had to make [our reSlarLS and had· to look through a screen of dust. Canadian Shawn Venables led the first lour starts of the event. On the fourth one, he had a problem olf of turn two. That gave the lead to Josh Larsen. With one big move, Brown took his Shoo/Lou's Leathers/A&A AUlO & Tire/Oury Grip/JT Racing U A Jawa from filth lO second. A few moments later, Cody went down with Brad Oxley. That brought out the final red 01 the day. On the final restart, Brown beatl.aJ:sen into the fir t tum. From that JX>int on it was all Brown. He maintained a two-length lead aU the way lO the checkered Dag: Larsen, after injuring his neck in one of the tan~les, fought olf a final lurn challenge from BlUy Hamill LO earn second. Starting the Modular Casework Systems/ TP/Milne/QuakerState Weslakeon the pole of the Scratdl main, Hicks led all the way in the four-lap main. Greg Hancock, a protege of two-time World Champion Bruce Penhall, came o{f the line second with Eddie Castro and Lucero third and fourth. Castro tried lO use the inside to go by Hancock on lap two. That didn't work and one lap later Lucerocame call ing. Lucero shot by Castro and continued past Hancock. Castro moved in belund the National champ and found himself back in third while Hancock dropped lO the ba k. When the white came out, Hicks had a three-length advantage. He took it all the way to the checkered. Castro pulled out all of the stops in his bid to catch Lucero, and on the final lap he swung wide. '19 Union City, Tennessee, rider Bobby Terrell controlled the action in the 125cc A division through both motos of the final round of the 1989 Winter-Am MX Series at the B&J Motocross Track in Clarksville. ExceUem weather made for super track conditions for the ISO-plus entries competing lor the overall series awards. Terrell continued Ibis winn;,ng ways in the 250cc A class as weU with l-~ 'scores for the wjp. I Brad Dyer set his sights on Terrell early on in moto one, but he overbraked into the final section of the five-lap moto one' and allowed three riders by. Dyer earned fourth. In molO twO Dyer found the going better as he took the holeshOl to the molO win. His 4·1 score was good for second overall behind. TerreU. Classic battle lines were drawn in the l25cc B and the 250cc B classes. In moto one of the 125cc B division Kevin Shemwell put his Mid-South Honda into the lead from the start with Michael Dowdy, Troy Frassrand, Chad Bolding and Scott Meredith on the in tow. Bolding moved into the second spot on lap two and continued the pursuit or hem well. Frassrand found the whoops section a little rough and stepped off with a bruised hand. Tlus allowed Dowdy into third with Meredith in fourth. From the back of the pack, Timy Hargrove drove his V-amaha mount inlo the fifth position. On lap four, Dowdy tried the doubles and found the ground super soft on the other side as he endoed into the mud on the outer rim o[ Lhe course. Meredith and Hargrove took adva ntage and jumped in to third and fourth respectively. In the final lap Shemwell tried a new line and slid out in the final turn. Bolding closed and took the win. hemwell restarted for second with Meredith third and Hargrove fourth. Bolding also earned the molO win in the 250cc B group. In molO two, Shemwell shot into the lead for good as the field attacked the fir t tum. Bolding earned the second position but could not catch the leader. Meredith placed a consistent third while Timmy Hargrove eaTRed the fifth overall position. Bemon, Kentucky, rider Mark Gordon came out of retirement and placed well with consistent finishes for fifth overall. Bolding pulled another win in the 250cc B class to take perfect 1·1 scores to the winner's table as Craig Fruit advanced to a fourth place moto one finish, a second in mOLO two and second overall. Newcomer Jeff May demonstrated skill in both the 125 and the 2500c C divisions, as he look the win in both classes in mOLO one. Steve Saco pushed his Yamaha lO second honors in moto one of the 2500c C bash, while Jim Gooch followed May in for second in the 125cc C class. In moto twO or both divisions, May appeared lO be headed to double class victories. In the 2500c group, however, Brian Ledford closed in from the third spot at the start to overtake May in the final comer. In the 125cc ovice group, May succumbed lO the rough track conditions and allowed Jim Gooch and Dan Kearns lO pass. Gooch's 2-2 scores were good for the overal I. Kearns earned the moto win. May's 1-3 scores tied for first, but he was dropped to second overall by his second moto finish. In the Senior Minicycle division, athan Chappell and JonIan Moneymaker put on a show. Moneymaker was able to earn the holeshot. but could nOt hold off the experienced Chappell as the twO battled throughout both motOS. Chappell was able to garner the first placing by molO'S end in both COntests and Moneymaker finished with two seconds. Indiana's Rick Catt found the going good in the t11ird spot and picked up the third overall trophy as Bo Morris joined 1I1 the awards with 4-4 scores.
