Faria, Gray top Costa Mesa Speedway By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, MAR. 31 Crowd favorites Mike Faria and Billy Gray started on the rigbt foot by winning First Division mains al the Orange County Fair- . ground's Coors Season Opener. The event marked the start of the 21st consecutive season at the famed Costa Mesa bull ring. Riding with motocross pants and a rugby shirt, Faria borrowed. a bike and went about winning Lbe Scratch main evenL Drawing the pole for his Team Scopelitle/Steve Lucerol STPlTsubaki/Kal-Gard Godden, Faria was even with Lucero and Bobby Schwartz as they raced off the line. Lucero bobbled in turn one and slipped to third. Seconds later, Schwartz had a problem in turn twO and dropped to the back. That gave Faria a lead that he never relinquished. Eddie Castro stalked National Champion Lucero, but Lucero continually fended off his charges. As they swept through the final bend, Castro hit Lucero's rear tire and sent the champion summersaulring. Faria took the checkered and the red at the same time. Referee Irwin Moon· gave Lucero second place and moved Schwartz up to third Castro, for causing the explosive crash, was disqualified. Coming off a win in his semi, 51·year-old Gray moved the RAZ Video GM into th;, point from the 10 yard line at. the start of the Handicap main. Walt Farnum was in second with Billy Hamill third. Faria, seconds after his Scratch main win, made it to turn one and felL Gray established a two-length lead and rode a perfect race. Farnum and Hamill became engaged in a battle lor second. Hamill tried to force Farnum out of his way, but Farnum wouldn't budge. • When the white flag came out for Gray, more than 6000 fans came to their feet to cheer him on. He took the checkered and they let out a thunderous roar. The checkered ended the race, but the action continued.. Second place finisher Farnum and Hamill came together. They went down and took Gray with them. Gray's kill switch broke.
