Mayfie.d dominates Sapu'pa Tria's By Rich Allman SAPULPA, OK, MAR. 19 The Mizells stated that they wanted to set up a "fun" trial and the weather actually cooperated chis lime at the Neon Trials in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The sections had one or twO majoTobslacies in them so you could nOl afford a mistake. There were 10 sections laid out on a somewhat hard-to-follow loop so the time limit.was strelched a little. The Novice class was won by Oklahoman 'Gordon Bode on his Yamaha with 14 points. K8cN's Pa~ McDona.ld was in second place with 20 POlnlS on a borrowed Yamaha. Cunis Mitchell finished third on his Beta with !f3 points JUSl ahead of Oklahoman Matt Moore. The Amateur class, which is usually full of very com petiti ve riders, had just two entries. Gary Price. on his thorou~hly ancient Montesa, had lhe ride of hiS life. Price averaged one point per section and ended up 30 points ahead of Oklahoma's Dr. John Patlerson. The lntermediate class victory was taken by Oklahoman Steve Fujan, 15 points ahead of Paul Bolen. Travis Mitchell just barely edged out perennial favorite Andre LaPorte on cleans. Travis had 1~ cleans -on his new brightly colored Fantic while LaPorte POSled 12 cleans on his Yamaha. Kirk Mayfield dominated the Expert class on his Yamaha. He was 84 points ahead of a struggling Rich Allman, also on a Yamaha. The Masters, many of whom had jusl driven in from the NashVille Stadium trials, were given ample opponunity lO use their "SLOP and hop" techniques. The sections were extremely light and wheel placement had to ~ be sJX>t-on. Ron Lee turned in an amazing nine poiots in 30 sections on his Beta. The Sunnyslope Honda/Maxima Racing Lubricants sponsored-ride look his 500 CR Honda through loo-plus miles of single track trail, rocks and sandwash to win the opener of the RMEC Enduro Series. The start was a lreal [or riders and spectators alike. Everyone left the line to head up the steep grade visible from the pit area. Most of the course was a timekeeper's del;ght with 24 mph averages. As the event progressed it 'became evident thatth.e tOP five riders Rames, K. Pepper, D. Burke, J. Blythe and C. Wilbanks were within a point of each other and most of the day it was a toss-up for the overall. Rolling into the A gas and the laSll2 mile section the word was out thal Howard Utsey, the president of the Arizona Trailriders Association, had set them up for the most demanding MX section they were likely to see in any enduro.
