Kevin Brown (2) grabbed the holeshot in the 250cc class but crashed a ha" mile into the race. Ohio's Tim Shephard powered his air-cooled Yamaha VZ490 to third place in the Open A class behind Summers and McSwain. Lojak was up to second overall, but this time his assault would be shortlived. "Eddie had the crash of the day," said Cunningham, who was just behind the WR250 rider when Lojak's front wheel washed out on a rock, racing down an access road. Naylor, who rated Brown's earlier get-off higher after witnessing both crashes, moved by Cunningham and into second overall, though he would be displaced by McSwain before the fourth lap was completed. Cunningham, meanwhile, began having trouble and dropped out of the race at the two hour mark. The junior class featured North Carolina winner Buren Hamrick running down his second win of the series. Hamrick bettered Ohio's Mike Frazee by eight minutes, while third place Mike McCarren folfowed by another 60 seconds. Mike Holbert was a commendable fourth with Yamaha-mounted Donald Bigley fifth in the 21-rider division. North Carolina's Harry Greenlee and Tennessee's Charles Galbraith spent the better part of the day going back and forth for the Super Senior A lead. Gal brai th eventually fell 60 seconds behind Greenlee on the final lap but maintained a sizeable advantage over third place john Giles. Lojak was back into contention for a class win on the fifth lap, riding fourth overall, 90 seconds behind McSwain and Naylor. Two flat tires on the next two laps finally shut the door on his winning chances, and the Pennsylvania star ended the day in 11 th place. As Lojak suffered through the latter part of the race, Hyde began to make his presence felt. Quietly overcoming his poor start with some sure passes and quick pit stops, Hyde pushed through to sixth overall after five lap behind Hough, who was slowed in the last hour by an injured hand. Hyde would take both Hough and Lojak on the next lap to end his day with a convincing fourth overall, one ahead of Hough and second in his cla s. In the 200cc A division KDX200 specialist Fredette claimed the class win with a three minute lead on runner-up Ben Hamrick. Illinois veteran Fredette, a class winner in last year's Blackwater 100, rode consistently throughout the day to gain his advantage. Behind West Virginia's Hamrick were Louisiana's Manny Garza, Indiana's Bryan Stoughton, and Kentucky's Mark Robertson, all Kawasaki-mounted. The race took a strange twist on the last of seven laps when Naylor began to press McSwain for the overall runner-up position. "I had no idea that Scott was ahead of us," said Naylor, "and as we got closer to the finish line Steve JUSt waved me by. I'm thinking, 'Wow, he just gave me the overall,' but now (I understand. Steve was just getting tired, and he was considerate enough to let me pass and go for the overall. I only wish I had known about Summers." It might not have done Naylor much good, though. Summers had set out for the last lap with three minutes to spare on McSwain and Naylor and was showing no signs of letting up. He would claim his first-ever National win with a four minute edge on Naylor, who picked up the top 250cc A trophy. Open A runner-up McSwain wa~ another 30 seconds back with Hyde six minutes further behind a the second 250 across the line. In the Amateur division North Carolina's Farrell Smith 'was the day's fastest B class rider, racking up six laps while winning the Open B division by an brow-raising eight minutes. Trailing the Yamaha rider in the 38 rider class were Kentucky's Michael Cornei and Maico rider Kent Wagner. The biggest class of the day, the 250cc Bs was also (he closest at the finish line. Missouri's Daniel Duckett took the win with just II seconds to spare on Honda-mounted Carlo Cracchiolo. Pennsylvania's Frank Keegan was third in the division which saw the first 29 riders awarded trophies. The 200cc B clas was nearly as big, with 74 riders lining up together. Ohio's Rocky johnson carne out on top of this heap with a one minute edge on Missouri's Albert Hejlikand Tennessee's jeffrey Harris. KTM-mounted Flip jendre bettered joseph Dawson to capture the Four-Stroke B win, while West Virginia's Donald Harless topped john Lee to take the top Masters class trophy. The 24-rider Senior B division was led by' Yamaha-mounted Mike Cluse with Ohio's Louis Dearman and KTM rider Carl Hoofman following. The Senior B class was won by Illinois' Charle Burk. Canada's Frank Cassady brought his Husqvarna down to take second. In the Sunday morning Youth race Ohio KX80 rider Mike McClellan outdueled Yamaha-mounted josh Lojak to score the high finish in the one hour event. Pennsylvania's Daryl Conner placed third, one minute behind the lead duo. • Results 0/A A: 1. Scott Summers; 2. Roneld Nevlor; 3. Ste.. McSwein: 4. Mark Hyde; 5. Kun Hough: 6. Jeff Russell; 7.
