then when it did I nearly dropped it in the creek." McSwain was oU in the top five and would soon have his Gear/Barr's Comp.llron Horse Honda in the lead. North Carolina Open A runner-up Tim Coombs punctured his tire just after the stan and would never make it back into contention. Ohio's Kevin Brown snared the 250cc A holeshot one minute after the big bikes were 0((, but his day would end less than a half mile later. Coming across the paved road that lead into the woods Brown's CR250 pitched sideways and sent him canwheeling 0(( the track. Naylor, a close second, later described the accident "one of the worst I've ever seen." Brown was fortunately able to get 0(( of the track before tbe bulk of the riders came through and was later able to joke about the incident that left him with bruised ribs: '1 thought that the rubber side should be up' towards the sky." Naylor inherited the lead, followed by Louisiana round two winner Scott Plessinger, Newell and Ed Lojak with Terry Cunningham, KTM-mounted Duane Conner and Kurt Hough ;n rnidpack. Even funher back were Hyde and former 125cc MX National and Supercross champ Mark Barnettt. XR600 rider Carey Stump placed his Honda thumper into the lead early on in Four- troke A action and eventually mounted a 10 minute lead on class runner-up Harvey Whitaker, another Kentucky contender, and third place Kevin Condon. Senior A rivals Mealer and Joseph Hull would have had a much closer go at it in the Plus 35 division but Mealer pulled away and won by three minutes. Paul Michels placed third. A the leaders came around to complete the first 25 minute lap McSwain held a 30 second edge on Summers with Michigan KTM pilot Eddie Keen third. Team Green's Cunningham was the 250cc A leader with Naylor just a bike length behind. Shepherd and Lojak were next, tr.ailed into the check by Hough, Conner and 500cc KTM rider Bob Shillinger. Plessinger was back in 15th and would take his bike into the pit with a blown shock. Three miles into the second loop Summers was able to get his Bridgestone/BelliS u perTra pp/P] I / Sprocket Specialists/White Bros.! Hallman/Town Sport USA-backed Honda a wheel up on McSwain to take over the overall lead. He extended it almost a full minute before the lap was complete, thus taking a 60 second margin on the rest of the pack into the econd hour of the run. Cunningham, Naylor and Lojak were making a combined run at McSwain by this time with Hough on their roost. Barnett also got into the lead action for a brief time before dropping his Tuf Racing-backed RM250 out of contention. Aaron Hough led the way into the barrels at the end of the first l25cc A lap with KXl25-mounted Brian Walker 30 seconds behind.. Hough would stretch his lead to two minutes . on the next lap as late starter Brian Stanley pu hed his YZl25 up into the runner-up spot. At the halfway mark Stan Lojak occupied second place behind Hough, and when the leader smashed his pipe together on a tree, Lojak was there to claim the lead position. By the end of the race Lojak had a seven minute cushion on North Carolina class winner Gene Onail. Tennessee's ]e(( Austin wa third with Indiana's Walker and Michigan KTM rider Eldon Keen going 4-5. Up front Summers continued to pull away from his pursuers, adding another 30 seconds on everyone.
