L.ewis nabs Coyote Derby Enduro win By Ch ris Jonnum 34 RED MOUNTAIN. CA. MAR . 5 Jimmy Lewis look th e overall win by one point at the Chaparrals M.C. Coyote Derb y Enduro held northeast of th e town of Red Mountain. In addition to being the second round of the 1989 AMA Disuict·37 Enduro Series, the event also offered D·37 desert points which attracted a number of desert racers. The competition was also the th ird round of th e D-37 Best of the West Series . A fairly lar~e turnout showed up for the enduro includmg T eam KTM with last year' s overall winner and Best of the West Champion Dan Smith. as wellas ra lly racer Scott Hard en aboard a 600cc four-stroke. Pleasantly wa rm weather greeted the riders Sunday morn ing for the 8:00 a.m . start. The enduro co nsisted of three d usty loops totalling a little ove r 100 mil es. T he first loop was technica l but no t too difficu lt. whi le the second o ne was a liul e [aster with qu ite a few whoop-de-docs. T he third loo p offered pretty scenery and fun trails including the everpopu lar Sand Hi lls. T he IRC/ Maier/ Sm ith / T ho usa nd Oaks Yamaha, Kawasaki -sponsored Lewis was the only rider to score a six , which included two points for burning a check . Second place went to Thousand Oaks Yamaha, Kawasaki-backed Pete Postel who was jut o ne point back with a seven. Postel was a minute early to th e same check as Lewis. Lewis protested the chec k. saying that the d ock was one minute fast but the club chec ked th e clock and determined it to be correct. Most riders were late to the check. Donnie Simo ne tied Postel on minutes but lost out o n seconds for third overa ll. The Dur alube/M ai er /Smith-sponsored Simone suffered a slight case of brain fad" befor e loop two, thinking that it started at 10:00 rather tha n 9:50. He started three minutes late but was able to zero th e first check o n the seco nd loop. He was near th e end of hi s minute, ho wever. 'and th is may have cos t him o n the tie-brea ker. Fourth a nd fifth pl aces o vera ll were tak en respect ivel y by Steve William a nd Robb Mesech er, bo th with scores o f 10. Team KTM had a bad day with Smith elecring to d ro p o ut d ue to a sti ll-healing co llarbone whic h he chose to save for the G rea t Mojave the foll owing weekend. Non e of the desert racers fared too well in th e o vera ll results du e not to lack of ability, but 10 lack of tim ekeeping eq uip ment. This had many of them burning checks. This didn 't stop them fro m havi ng fun , how ever. Desen ace Mike Six berry , said , "T h is was my first enduro and I had a lo t of fun . I liked the fact that you cou ld ride with your friends and work on yo ur bike a littJ e at th e breaks . I'm afraid to say it, but I might be hooked."
