By David Procida SAN BERNA RDINO, CA, FEB. 19 Factory KT M rider Mike H ealey, alo nll with Pro Cycle KTM p ilot Edd ie Hicks dominated th e Pro classes today a t CRC 's Diamond Head Grand Prix at G len He len Raceway. When th e ga te dropped to sta rt the 250cc Pro cla ss, every bike started with a single kick , making it a mad dash for the first turn , Hondamounted Bob Stephenson edged out the pack wi th Hea ley. Mark Dec ker and Suzukimounted Quintin Smith heading the pa ck. Heal ey had his KT M singing along in it's upper gears as he quickly closed o n Stephenson 's 1989 CR250. The H on da rider fough t ho ld o nto the lead slot, but Heal ey ha d other ideas. By th e start of th e second la p . there was a lead cha nge and H eal ey's wh ite a nd orange KT M was now leading Step he nson . Decker had his Inl an d Empire Kawasaki in the n um ber three slo t with Sm ith and Don Draz rounding o u t the top five slots . Once in th e.lead , Hea ley was there to stay a nd began to pull away from Stephe nson. increasing the ga p wit h every lap . At th e 30 m in ut e mark in the 45 minute race , all th e 250s were pretty well sp read o ut a nd remained th at way to the chec kered flag. Healey took the wi n with Stephe nso n and Decker making it into the to p th ree slots. Also pu tt in g KTM into the spotl igh t toda y was Edd ie Hi cks. Hi cks smo ked to a wire-to-wire win in th e 125cc Pro class wit h Gr eg Nelso n and Troy Sm ith making it int o the to p three. Simonsen a nd Dave Steri ng. At the chec kered flag the order remained the same. . In the mai n even t Anderson hooked up pe rfectly o nce agai n and reached turn o ne first ahea d of Sim onsen and Sterin g. The ma in was a ca rbo n copy of the heat race wi th And erson slowly building up a near -stra igh taw ay lead. The 800c class was combi ned with th e I25s and scored sepa ra tely. Simonsen and Garth Roet h le rod e the 125s and started in fron t of the 80s. Simonsen go t th e scratch followed by Roethle, And erso n, Noah Kirk land a nd Ja son Nel son. Anderson passed Roe thl e dow n the back stre tch just befor e Roethl e lost it. Anderso n sta rted to reel in Simo nse n wh ile Roethle got restarted a nd lost it o n the o ther stra ig h ta way. An derso n a nd Nelson co n tinued to chase Simonsen while Roethle lost it on the other straightaway. Anderson a nd Nelson continued to chase Simo nsen while Roe th le lost it one mor e tim e. In o ther Expert action, Warren Diem picked u p w here he left off at Timonium by taki ng th e wreck shortened 2500c fina l ove r Randy Texter a nd a fast closing Georgie Pr ice. and Ken Dahlin too k the 600cc Expert . Denn is Aungst too k a double in the Am at eur ranks with wins in the 250 a nd 600cc fina ls. Desp ite efforts by tra ck per sonnel. the dirt su rface refused to compact into a workable surface, and gradually the ho les opened up. . Price took th e poin t a t the start of the second lap and started to pad his lead , unti l he sta lled h is machine abo u t ha lfway -and cou ld n 't get it restarted. That ga ve th e lea d to Gary Foard wh o was in a tight battle with his brother and Ken Dah lin for the lead. With two laps to go , Dahlin passed the m bo th o n the o utside of th e first turn. On the nex t lap, Gary got a li llie sidewa ys, and Richard center punched him, kn ocking both o ut, bu t since they were the final survivors. th ey got fourth and fifth. How ever, he had a li ll ie help when Phill Do uglas gave u p . the lead and wou nd up in a tree. The first of th ree races saw a ll th e D-36 A and B riders ta ke off fro m the sta rt line with 'he exception of J erry Fo uts who lost a master lin k a t the lin e. McKenzie led Douglas, Pa ul Funaro and Ron Day for the first lap, while it was Duan e Scon moving to fou rth overall and first Vet o n lap two . Donn ie Simo ne too k to p of th e list in the l25cc class the nex t lap mo vin g to sevent h overall , whi le Douglas took th e lead at the start of the fo urth lap. Going for the chec kered with six laps in. o ut or the trees came McKenzie with a smile and sta ti ng, " P hil 's back down the tra il in a tree.' Sco tt took th e second overall with Douglas bringing in his new YZ for third o vera ll and expla in ing, " I saw thi s fender o n th e trail and f gu ess f sort of loo ked too hard at it and crashed". It was th ird overa ll and second in th e 250cc Expert for Douglas along with a bloody nose, with Funaro fourth over Gary Fargo . Rich ard Sm it h took th e Co ast Honda to to p ra nkings in the 2500c B d ivisio n wi th teamma te Rober t Bru mi t second o ver Brian Dickey. The second race saw Ha nk Waczkowsk i top the 250cc C gr oup and the overa ll with a five lapper over Craig Avery a nd third to Mike Ryan , who was first in th e Open C class. Third in th e 250cc went to " Airti me" Er ic Pu celik who shows great a ll -around ·ta lent aft er win ning Golden State events and Cow Pa lace Arenacross action.
