change th e rear tire at each pit stop, using a total of three in the co urse of the afternoon's racing. Mich elin tire representative Ken Williams specula ted tha t th e tires were fail in g because th e riders .were hitting th e banking a gear hi gher com ing out of the longer ch icane a nd were carryi ng that speed down th e length of th e front strai ghtaway. Later, he said tha t he'd been told by a few riders that th ere were some grooves in th e tra ck at the chicane exit that may have been causm g the damage. Wiliams told each of th e team s to ra ise th eir tir e p ressures up from the 36-38 psi they'd been using to 40 psi. This didn't help T ea m MOlar Sport, as Arnaiz lat er experienced a ca tastro phi c tir e exp losio n that left the machine with a broken tail section and twi sted rear subframe, and Arn aiz with tire marks on his helmet. H e coas ted to a stop at the start/finish line, out of the race. Tea m Captain Malcolm Hill expressed hopes that th e tire scenario would not be rep layed at future rounds of th e series, but felt th at hi s team had proven the new Yamaha's worth. Wh en asked wh at effect th e tire problems wo uld have o n next weekend's 200, 'will ia ms said th a t it didn 't look good. The Superbike riders will be co mpe ting on essentiall y th e sa me tir es that th e end urance rid ers used today. . Quarterley, o n the other hand, had hi s ow n opinion on th e tire problem: " I th in k the damage was ca used by debr is on th e track. 1 sawall sorts of th ings ou t there - shift levers, knee pucks - th ere were cras hed bikes parked everywhere. Besides, our tire went all of a sudden. Usually, wh en a tire blisters, it gets progressivel y worse." Michelin s, however, weren 't th e only tires pun ished by th e unforgiving Daytona high banks. The 3-D Ra cin g team of Ca lvin Ra yborn III an d David Deveau al so suffered a ch u nking Dunlop K591 production racing tir e on their Suzuki. Deveau bo rrowed a spa re wheel from Ren tzell 's Superbike, complete with a Michelin radial slick, and event ually finished 10th in class and 13th overall. Ro ugh Stock Ra cing was running the sa me Michel in rear tire as the other teams, but the ligh ter, less powerful 750cc H onda RC30 was more for giv in g. McMurter was especially enjoying hi s outing on the RC30, since he 'll be raci ng one in the Canadian National s la ter th is season. The Canadian N a tiona l Superbike Ch am pi on will ride the ex -Bubba Sh ob ert VFR 750 in next . weekend's Daytona 200. Ren tzell brought the Dut ch ma n Ra cin g entry into the winner 's circle a nd celebra ted with a whoop and a holler. "This is the fou rt h year in a row I'v e won the seaso n opener," he said. "I hope it's the first step o n th e way to the c ha mpio ns hip." Dutchman Racing is spo nsored by Arai , Fox , Sudco, Ontario, Mich elin, Mikuni, PBI , T su baki, EBC, ND and Pen nzoil. Like Rentzell, McMurter sta rted and finished th e race, bringing the Ro ugh Stock Racing RC30 into th e p its after a rel ativel y eve nt-free outi ng. This was a far cry from last fall 's race, wh en he finish ed the ra ce with a rounded-off rear sprocket. Team Gibsonia/Englert Ra cing's Bob Englert a nd Dave Sm ith had a lock on third place lat e in the th ird ho ur, but were forced to sto p to re p lace their Yamaha FZRIOOO's sh ift lever and had to settle for eighth, FastlineRacing's effo rts .were almost thwarted iii the closing' laps MICHELI N The Dutchmen (center) celebrate w ith second and third place fin ishers Rough Stock and Fastline Racing, as J ohn Curwick of H oote r's Tea m Flo rida go t pa st Stern briefly, but Cu rwi ck had to make one more pi t stop. " I wanted to get i n to th e winne r's circle so bad ," Curwick said. T he Hooter 's Suzu ki, sponsored by a local cha in of resta urants by th e same name, fin ished fourth. Curwick was helped by Mike Ken ney, Wa yn e Wa llS a n d Stephen Dangleman. Fasrline Racing took th e third posi tion. After rac ing on Du nl ops for the pa st few yea rs, Stern recentl y switched to Michelins wh en Mark Ma tzin ger lost his West .Coast di stri bu torsh ip to Vance & H in es. But unlike th e top two finis he rs, they expe rienced no tire problems . " O ur lack of horsepower prob abl y sa ved the tire," said Rheaume. Fastline Racing is sponsored by REC, Barnell, Kerk er , Mikuni, PBI , Cycle Imports, Michelin/ ICRT; Ferodo, C ycl e Ra cer , Vreeke Industries , Yoshimura a nd J ewel H endricks. Team T yler 's David Cl yde, La rry Schwarzba ch and Br ian Wh ite rounded out th e top five o n a Suzuki 1100. GTU winners Team Longevit y were thrilled to be in th e winner' s circle, espec ially Blais , who wa s return in g to ac tion aft er an arm- a nd leg-breaking crash last Septem ber a t Florida's Moroso Mot orsports Pa rk. " It feels good to be back," he said. The team 's o n ly p rob lem wa s a trans mission th a t would jump out of gear, Team Longevity is sponsored by Tom Moore, Mike Stojec k Racing, Phil Flack Racing, Ara i, Performance Products, Castrol and Mi ke Bill e. Second-pla ce G T U fini shers Team Toomer, with riders Gl en n Barry and Jon Rober ts on a Yama ha FZR600, protested th e class win ners over a n all eged lap count discrepancy, bu t th e protest was den ied and . the resu lts upheld. Third place in th e GTU ranks went to Gat or Ra cing's Dan Warren and Ken Stephens o n a no th e r Ya maha 600. Like T eam Longevit y, their ri de was hampered by a tra nsmi ssion which wo ul d do nwsh ift a t will. One usual GTU front-run ner th a t experience d problems ear ly on was Tea m No Drugs. Kirk Hoeppner was forced to tak e to 'the gra ss in turn one, and th en worked his way up to a top-10 pos itio n in class before a GTO mach ine made a ra the r-tooclose p ass a nd sn app ed o ff the Yamaha FZR600's front brake lever. J eff and brother Kirk finished ninth m class. Sprint Races -FlOri da 's own Mark Chin won two sprint races on his Yamaha FZRIOOO in th e Un lim ited GP and Heavyweigh t Su perbike ca tegor ies. H e als o finished fourth in the Middleweight Superbike race o n hi s ailing FZR600 when he was n ip ped a t th e line for . th ird by Motorcyclist Ma ga zin e staffer Nick Ien a tsch, who ca me from the back of th e gri d o n his Steve Johnson- prepared, Kerker-eq uipped FZR600. T hat race was won by Joh n Eidenberger wi th John H oppe rstad second, both a lso on Yamahas. Chin ac tua ll y led th e Middl eweig ht Supersport race, but retired from the race because he was ru n ning an illegal, AMA Su pers po rt- spec ai rbo x (AMA and AMAlCCS ru les a re different). COll R ussell scored the on-track victory in th e 600cc Su persp ort race , but he d idn 't show up a t the mandatory post-race tech inspection a nd was DQ'ed. Just as well, since he was running an AMA Supersport-spec Yoshimura-prepared Suzuki Katana and compe ted in the race only to obtain tra ck time in preparation for th e following weekend's Supersports event, The win went to Hondamounted Mike Barnes; with Yamaha rider Gary Griffi th second an d lena tsch aga in third.
