1**************************************************** ***~ . ~ ! level that yo u have to ge t to in your ' co nditioning. Until . you do th at , until you race with those guys you don 't how much energy it tak es. That's wh at wears on you and that's the step Lech ien has to ma ke," sai d Bail ey. " I think everyo ne should keep an eye o n J ohnn y O 'M a ra ," n oted Bail ey. " O' Mara is motivated, he finished third at Atla n ta, he' s had a number of good rides, he's bounced back from a ri b injury a nd I'd say Johnn y is back a n d he's going strong. " I wou ldn 't call O 'M ara a dar k horse," co nti nued Bailey. " H e's a rider wh o ha s had a co up le of bad seasons and it wou ldn' t surprise me to see Johnny win Daytona. If he go t the hol esh ot a nd was out th er e leading he could easily go all th e way. I've talked to him a few tim es and he's real exci ted about his new Suzuki , he 's excited about racing because he's back in the hunt, he knows he's capable of being in the winner's circle. H e just hasn 't had the breaks go hi s way. It 's just a ma tter of time and Daytona cou ld be the p lace." There are two key ingredients to winning the Daytona Supercross By H o nda , according to Bailey. " Daytona is unique in that we start 40 riders instead of th e 21 we do in the other Supercross Seri es rounds," he said. " La pped riders are always a factor, but o n this race tra ck lapped riders are even more of o ne. There will be rid ers who will be getting tired early because of the demands of the trac k. It on ly takes one little mistake, on e rider getting ou t of shape and getting sideways in a sectio n of th e wh oops whe n th e leaders are passin g to change th e whole com p lexion of the ra ce: "The wh oops are goi ng to be the thing to wa tch because that's wh ere the real passing will be done. The whoops ar e tri cky, the thing is how fast can you get through the whoops, how stra ight can you go through them, can you keep it under control for 12 la ps. I lik e to put in a lot of whoops because I know that 's what will make or break th e race righ t th ere." In addition to the stars of th e Camel Su percross Series in the 250cc ranks , th ere will also be action in the l25cc Eastern Regio nal Championship Supercross Series . Bailey is just as sure of hi s opinions in assessing who is the strongest rider in tha t class. Bailey says it 's Team Yamaha's Damon Brads haw, who will be making his professional debut at Daytona this year . The l6- year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, was too you ng to compete in last year's edition of th e Daytona Supercross. "T here's no doub t that Damon Bradshaw is th e up a nd co m ing rider," said Bailey. " T here are one or two others wh o are doing very well , but I don 't kn ow of an other rider in his first year 'as a pro wh o has been abl e to ride with th e established top riders lik e he has . H e won a major supercross in Canada last year, beat Rick y Johnson and a lot of other top stars in a su percross in Japan and took a th ird in th e San Diego Supercr oss earl ier in th e season, which is basically unheard of for a first-y ear g uy. "The only thing that will stop him in th e 125cc class is a breakdown. He proved just how much better. he is than th e competition in Miami when he crash ed, came from near last back to third, crashed again and th en came back to win on th e las t lap. That's determination. The competition in the Eastern Regi onal Series just isn 't there for him." , • ~ SPONSO RS: * RID ERS CONFIRMED: ~ .
