are the hollow, three-spoke cast aluminum alloy wheels a 3.50 x l7-inch front and 4.50 x 17 rear - and the Michelin radial tires which now carry a Z rating for sustained speeds of up to 168 mph. The entire packa~e is wrapped in a slick, aerodynamic fairing which effectively isolates th e rider from th e elements, providing adeq ua te space to tuck in for race track riding. Our test unit was a startlingly attractive black with silver, a nd the bik e is al so availabl e in blue/ wh ite. The result of all these changes is a motor th at produces immense, almost scary m idrange torqu e wrapped in a chassis that is well up to th e task of co n trolli ng it, After one rid e, we dubbed it th e " J e-sus-X-R ". Live wi th this bik e for awhile, however, and yo u'll learn to love its abundant horsepower. Mod eration is the key, particularly wh en exiting comers. T oo much throttle while leaned over and yo u' ll find yourself testing the limits of opposite steering lock as well as the a mple traction of the Michelin radials. We did find th e 1100's first gear 00 tall for smoothly accelerating from a stop. Second gear is probably where the 1100 will spend mo st of its street-ridden life, and wo rks well for around-town cru ising. The bik e will comfortably cru ise at freeway speeds in third, alth o ugh fourth is less buzzy. Fifth gear is reserved for race tracks a nd backroads only. Creature comforts include a fourway eccent rically-adjusta ble brake lever, blur-free (for on ce) mirrors and a bright red low -fuel indicator ligh t that IS extre mely pessim istic. Before you begin to think that all about the GSXR llOO is sweet ness and light, let it be kn own that we do have a few comp lain ts. Number on e is th e footpeg position which is too hi gh and too far rea rward for taller riders, even when negotiating th e twi sties. We'd gladly sacr ifice a bit of gro und clearance for more legroom, especially as th e fairing lowers tou ch down some time before the pegs. The riding pos ition is less radi cal than th e 750's due to th e fact that the cont ro ls now reside above th e triple clamps, but th e " d ip-ons" are actuall y rubber-mounted an d move around a bit 'mo re than we'd lik e to see. Passengers? Don 't even think about it. Next is the front tire , which is too triangulated for an ything short of hard co rn ering. Granted, the profile makes for quick transitions and puts a large footprint on th e ground at serious lean angles, but betw een th ese extremes it pro vides a vague, teetering feeling. We replaced o ur test un it's tires with a set of Michelin Hi-Sport rad ial s in th e stoc k sizes which completel y transformed th e bik e. The front H i-Sport now rolls into corners gradually rather than fallin g in , yet allo ws the bik e to be flicked in just as hard as th e stockers. And th e H i-Sports are stickier to boo L The do wn side is the shorte r life ex pecta ncy o f th ese production ra cing tires, bu t we feel that most spo rt riders will find that it's worth the trade-off. A new sport-touring standard In creating th e new Katana 750, Suzuki foll ow ed th e same methods em p lo yed in th e m aking of th e GSXRIlOO. Pai ring th e 600 cc Kat ana 'fra me with th e GSXR750 en~i ne p roduced th e perfect middleweIght sport-tourer. The newest Katana bridges more th an just a disp lacement gap. It also bridges a ga p in func tio n. As th e o nly four-cylinder 600 in Suzuki's lineup, the Kat ana 600 has to perform as a com pe tent sport bik e. The Suzuki _1nS_ u _ _ mos ~idevs ",. . .
