Daytona Trivia: In 1948 Floyd Emde took his Indian to an 18-second victory over Norton rider Bi ll y Mathews in the Daytona 200. A field of 155 riders started the race on the beach course and 45 were still running at the finish. The purse was $5500 and an estimated 24,000 people lined the course to watch the racing. Wimmer, 31, of Munich, West Germany, will ride a Suzuki, backed by Hein Gericke Motorsport. Wimmer will then head to Japan for the GP season opener. He'Il ride an Aprilia in the 250cc World Championship title chase. Jamie Whitham. one of Britain's rising road race stars. is headed for Daytona with a Heron Suzuki GB -backed superbike for the Daytona 200. Whitham is a protege of former GP and Isle of Man TT veteran Mick Grant. Team Honda's Roger DeCoster says that it's important for one of his riders to win the Daytona Supercross to impress the Honda factory technicians.
