One hundred fifty miles in this kind of terrain is a lot tougher than a lo t of motocrosses. I have a lo t of respect for them. It was tight and choppy. After finish in g the first 15 to 20 miles of ma nzanita an d ruts, I thought, 'Glad that 's over,' bu t it was just the beg inning." One point beh ind La Po rte was fellow Kawasaki pilot Kurt H ough. H o ugh lost h is score card duri ng the ride, was able to retrieve it, but had to carry it " arou nd in my mouth for ha lf the race. It just wasn't a good da y for me." He came in ninth overall. Rounding out th e top I0 riders was Gravitt, trying a " western " enduro for the first time. 'This fast stuff scares me," said Gravitt, a resident of Georgia. " I got scared the last four miles han gin g out o n those whooped-out roa ds. I like the ma nzanita section, though, where you could n 't see five feet in front of you. " Iro nman of th e race honors went to Matt Stavish , w ho recently advanced to double A status. The 250cc H onda pilot had broken his left wrist two weeks prior at th e H oll i st er Cowpunch er National Har e Scramble. Pain was evident in hi s wrist through the stu tter bumps, but that didn 't keep th e rider from Minnesota from a 15th overall finish. Chris Wilkins, aboard a KTM , beat his brother Tim by a lonel y point for the Open A win. Chris had th e advantage over his brother when Tim was hit by a branch losing " one second a nd his memory." Bo th broth ers enjoyed their first Ca lifornia enduro stating that it was similar to Colorado's, but with a littl e more open terrain.
