VINTAGE Rice TIre Distributor Oldsmar, FL33557 (8 13) 855-5801 First-year Expert Todd Hoge leads Scott Russell early in the A Superbike race at Talladega Grand Prix Raceway. Russell won. Hoge took second. Russell sets new mark at WERA RR opener By Larry Lawrence TALLADEGA, AL, FEB. 12 Scott Russell put cl ub racers throughout the nation on notice b y showing up at' a noncontingency pa ying event an d setting a goa l of breaking his own track record at Talladega Grand Prix Raceway. J ust beca use the 23-yearold Morrow, Georgia, rider has inked a factory deal with Yoshimura Suzuki doesn't mean that he will be content to sit back and ride the AMA Superbike Series . On the contrary, Russell fully intends to keep his road racing skills honed to razor sharpness by co mpeting whenever and wherever he can. To say that Russell has mastered the 1.3mile " L itt le Talladega" circuit would be unders ta ti ng the fact. In the three years that ' the circuit has been open, Russell has won more races, set more marks and wo n mo re contingency mo ney he re than anyone. The only person to even come close to breaking Russell's dominance here is the king of production racing, Doug Polen. On-this weekend, Russell entered three races, won them all, and set a new goa l for others to shoo t for by turning a 59.21-second lap tim e during the Formula USA race. Kurt Hall led the first la p on his Action HondaSuzuki/Fox/Metzeler/ Arai-sponsored - production Suzuki GSXR750. followed by Cam Roos on another GSX R sponsored by MotoLiberty/Dunlop/ Arai /NGKlD&D and Roswell Honda. Russell was following closely on his GSXR in Superstock trim. Russell.listed sponsors of the bike as Yoshimura/EBC Bra kes and AGV Helmets, but this was not a Yoshimura-prepared bike - this was the same Vic Fasola-prepped bik e that Russell rode last year. In any case, Ru ssell passed both Roo s and Ha ll on the second lap . On th e third lap Russell set the track record and on the fourth, th e race for first was, for all practical purposes. over. The race for second, though, was a bit more in teresting. Three defending WERA National Sprint Champ ions - Hall, Roos and J ay Denham - a ll battled for the seco nd sp?t on the last lap with Hall taking the posit io n by half-a -bi ke-length at th e checkered flag . T he new Yamaha FZR6 00s defi nitely proved to be race- winni ng machines d uring their \VERA de bu t. FZR-m ounted riders bagged four wins incl uding three for Novice Bill y Eisenacher. . Probabl y the best race of the weekend was the D Superbike co ntest. Pat Ch andler led a seven bike lreight train (all FZR400s) during the first ha lf of the race before fad ing and ha nding the lead over to Tennessee's Rober t Nutt. Ch uck Huneycutt took over second and stayed close for a couple m ore laps befo re Nu tt ex ten ded h is lead. Chandler, su fferi ng from exhausted forearm muscles. ma naged to hold off th e hard-charging Da ve Mim s and Billy Atkinson a t the fin ish. Interestingly, th e wi n for Nutt ex tended his machine's undefeated streak to a secon d year. The FZR400 Nu tt was riding was Cam Roo s' cham pionship-winning bike last year. Continge ncies ava ila ble for the weekend incl uded programs fro m Metzeler T ire , Action Honda/Suzuki a n d Cunni n gham Cycl e World. Win ners incl uded Bill y Eisenacher with $ I50 fro m Metzeler and Kurt H all and Willi am Mercer wi th $125 each fro m Action Honda/Suzuki. Results F·U SA; 1. Scott Russell (Suz); 2 .
